UPI Payments: India’s digital payments space doesn’t really sit still for long, and if you use UPI regularly, there’s a small but meaningful change you’ll notice soon. The whole idea is simple: fewer steps while paying, especially for everyday transactions.

Paying Without Entering Your PIN

Think about how often you unlock your phone using your fingerprint or face. Now imagine using that same action to approve a UPI payment.

That’s exactly what this new feature does. For smaller payments, you no longer have to type in your UPI PIN every single time. You can just authenticate using your fingerprint or face scan and move on. It feels quicker, and honestly, a lot less repetitive.

That said, this isn’t a full replacement for your PIN. It’s more like a shortcut for low-value payments. There’s a cap of ₹5,000, so anything above that will still require your PIN like before.

How It Works In Real Life

There’s nothing complicated going on in the background. The system simply uses the biometric data already stored on your phone.

So whether you’re scanning a QR code at a shop, sending money to a friend, or paying online, the app gives you the option to authenticate using biometrics instead of entering a PIN. One quick scan, and you’re done.

And if the fingerprint or face scan doesn’t work for some reason, you’re not stuck. You can always switch back to entering your PIN.

Where You’ll See This Feature

The rollout has already started across a few popular platforms.

ICICI Bank has introduced it through its iMobile app, where you can enable or disable biometric payments whenever you want.

Apps like PhonePe are also supporting this with a simple one-tap flow. Meanwhile, CRED and Paytm are bringing similar options, so it’s not limited to just one platform.

Why This Actually Feels Useful

This isn’t some flashy feature you’ll use once and forget. It’s the kind of thing that quietly makes daily payments smoother.

If you’re in a crowded place or in a hurry, typing a PIN can feel like an extra step you don’t want. Using biometrics speeds things up and also avoids the awkwardness of entering your PIN in public.

At the same time, keeping the ₹5,000 limit makes sure there’s still an extra layer of security for bigger payments.

It’s a small tweak on the surface, but once you start using it, going back to typing a PIN every time might feel unnecessarily slow.
