Google has just dropped a new "Call for Me" feature, and this new feature lets users use the Gemini AI assistant to make calls to real-world businesses on their behalf. Yes, you heard that right. With this latest feature, you can tell Gemini to call a real store directly and ask if there is stock for the product you need, or call a doctor's office to book an appointment or even make reservations at a restaurant.
However, the feature right now is still in its experimental phase, and Pixel 11 is the only device on which the feature is available with a Gemini subscription and location wise its in the United States only.

Apart from that, eligible users will also be required to download the beta version of Google's Phone app for Android. Furthermore, this feature will also enable Gemini to share the user's personal information upon approval, and users will also be able to log calls through a live transcript of the conversation that it had, as well as take over the conversation at any time they require, the company has said.
This feature will also use users' own mobile number to make these calls, and Gemini will use it directly to dial it.
Gemini will let the person or automated system on the other end know that it is an AI once the call is answered. From there, it can handle much of the waiting that usually makes these calls frustrating, including working through automated menus and staying on hold.
The move is part of a broader shift in how smartphone makers are thinking about AI. Instead of simply helping users inside individual apps, newer AI agents are being designed to understand what a person wants and take care of the task themselves. Meta is heading in a similar direction with its Muse and Instinct AI agents, which can make calls for users.
Google has already experimented with AI features for phone calls, but those tools had fairly limited capabilities. The company is keeping this new experience small for now, describing it as an experiment. Google says conversations in the real world can be unpredictable and nuanced, so it wants more time to refine how Gemini handles them before expanding the feature to more users.
Other Calling Features in Gemini AI
Google has been experimenting with several AI-assisted calling features before it came to Call for Me. At an I/O event years ago, Google showcased a demo of an AI agent call feature, which made a call to a salon to make a reservation. The high point that wowed the audience was the natural-seeming conversation with "ahhs" and "umms", like a real human does, coming straight out of the AI agent.
Google is still experimenting, and last year we saw a feature called Ask for Me that lets Gemini call businesses on behalf of the user and enquire about things like services or pricing.
There are other features as well, like 'Hold for Me' and 'Talk to a Live Rep'. These features can help you navigate the phone trees and then be on hold automatically until a real person responds. Another feature is 'Direct My Call', which can help navigate through IVR systems.
