Meta just shared its first-quarter results, and while the overall picture still shows growth, there is a small shift that is hard to ignore. The company revealed that its combined daily active users across Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp saw a slight decline compared to the previous quarter.

Growth Still There But Momentum Slows

Meta’s “Family daily active people” metric stood at 3.56 billion for the quarter ending March 2026. That is still a 4 percent jump compared to the same period last year, so it is not all negative. But the dip from the last quarter signals that something may be shifting in how people are engaging with these platforms.

The company pointed to external factors like internet disruptions in Iran and restrictions on WhatsApp in Russia as key reasons behind the decline. However, reports suggest there could be more going on beneath the surface.

Is Feed Quality Becoming A Problem

According to multiple reports, the drop in users could also be linked to declining feed quality across Meta’s platforms. The concern is that users are increasingly seeing repetitive or low-value content, which might be impacting how often they return to the apps.

Some estimates suggest that Meta may have lost around 20 million users collectively during the quarter, although the company has not officially confirmed this number.

Instagram Algorithm Changes In Motion

Meta does not seem to be ignoring the issue. Reports indicate that it is already working on improving the content experience, starting with Instagram. The platform is said to be tweaking its recommendation algorithm to prioritise more original and meaningful content.

The updated system is expected to reduce the visibility of posts that are heavily recycled or simply repurposed without adding anything new. Content from websites that rely too heavily on Instagram traffic, as well as news posts that lack clear authorship, may also see reduced reach.

Bigger Bets On AI Continue

Even as it works on fixing feed quality, Meta is doubling down on artificial intelligence. They have apparently pumped up to about $10 billion into AI this year, indicating that they know how crucial the role of intelligent algorithms would be in solving the issue at hand.

Looking Ahead

It is not a time when Meta is having troubles, but it is rather a phase when the company acknowledges a growing trend within itself. Not only is it crucial to increase the user base for its applications, but equally significant is the need to ensure that the material consumed daily through these applications is of superior quality. In an ever-changing scenario of social networking websites such as Instagram, the above algorithms become very relevant.
