Starlink in Meghalaya: The Government of Meghalaya has gone ahead and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Elon Musk-owned Starlink to amp up internet connectivity throughout the state, with remote and rough terrain areas in focus. Meghalaya's CM Conard K. Sangma shared the development through a social media post, and this step marks an important milestone when it comes to connectivity across the state, especially in places that have a connectivity gap.
"Glad to witness the MoU signing between the Government of Meghalaya and Starlink India. Over the past 8 years, we have strengthened infrastructure, embraced technology, and improved governance, reducing processes that once took 30 days to just 3 days. Yet, connecting our remotest schools, health centres, and communities remains a challenge," Conard K. Sangma said. The chief minister also added that the partnership will aid in getting advanced satellite connectivity that will help in covering these gaps.

In a post on X he expressed, "This initiative will help save lives through better healthcare access, improve learning opportunities for students, and enhance livelihoods for farmers and rural communities," adding further that the plan is to make "Shillong into a hub for IT and technology in the Northeast, creating opportunities for our talented youth and building a strong digital ecosystem for the future."
Starlink Internet Through Satellite
Starlink delivers internet using satellites placed in low Earth orbit, which means it does not depend on ground infrastructure like mobile towers or fibre networks. This approach can be especially beneficial for places like Meghalaya, where it is difficult to establish traditional connectivity.
With a small satellite dish installed, villages located in even the remotest areas can be connected with high-speed internet. Such a shift is likely to create new possibilities for various sectors.
For example, in terms of education, it can help schools access online classes, providing students with opportunities they would have otherwise been deprived of. In terms of healthcare, it can help people consult doctors over the internet instead of going to distant places for basic consultations.
