OpenAI says its latest image generation feature inside ChatGPT is seeing massive traction in India, and the numbers are surprisingly huge for such a short period of time.
According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, users in India have already generated more than one billion images using ChatGPT Images 2.0. What makes that milestone stand out even more is how quickly it happened. The feature only rolled out on April 21, meaning Indian users crossed the billion-image mark in less than a month.
Altman shared the update on X, where he called the response from India “awesome to see.” OpenAI also revealed that India has become the platform’s biggest market globally for the image generation feature since launch.

Already more than 1 billion images created there; awesome to see.
The popularity seems to be driven by how easy the tool is to use and how accurately it follows prompts compared to older AI image generators. Users have been experimenting heavily with different visual styles, edits, and personalised creations directly inside ChatGPT.
One trend that reportedly became especially popular was called “Cinematic Portrait Collage,” where users transformed their photos into layered studio-style portraits with dramatic lighting and Indian fashion-inspired styling. Another widely used trend was “Mini Me World,” which created animated 3D versions of users placed inside their real-life surroundings.
Beyond viral-style prompts, many users also turned to the AI tool for more practical image edits. People have been using it to improve lighting in photos, restore old pictures, create anime-style portraits, design manga-inspired comic strips, generate travel collages, and even make personalised Chibi stickers.
OpenAI says the newer Images 2.0 model brings major improvements in prompt understanding and image accuracy. Users can now type much longer and more detailed instructions, and the AI is better at understanding exactly what they want to create. The model also handles layered visuals more naturally and generates text inside images with improved accuracy compared to earlier versions.
Another reason for the strong adoption in India could be multilingual support. The company says the model supports several languages including Hindi, Bengali, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, making the feature more accessible to a wider audience.

Interestingly, while usage numbers have exploded, the feature hasn’t really produced a single breakout viral moment on social media the way some competing AI image tools have in recent months. Still, the scale of adoption suggests ChatGPT’s image generation feature has quickly become one of the most heavily used AI creativity tools in the country.
