Huawei was the first company to bring a tri fold smartphone to the market with the Mate XT Ultimate Design. It was a bold move and, naturally, it grabbed plenty of attention. Now, it looks like the company isn't planning to simply refresh the hardware for its next model. If a newly surfaced patent is anything to go by, Huawei could be giving its second generation tri fold phone a completely new look.

The patent, shared by tipster Ice Universe, shows what is believed to be Huawei's next tri fold smartphone, widely expected to be called the Huawei Mate XT 2. Although Huawei hasn't confirmed the device yet, the drawings hint that the company is exploring a different way of folding the phone.

That's probably the first thing you'll notice. The current Mate XT Ultimate Design folds outwards, leaving part of the flexible display exposed even when the phone is closed. The new patent tells a different story. This time, both side panels appear to fold inwards over the main display, which means the flexible screen stays protected inside when the phone is folded. It's a small change on paper, but one that could make a big difference in day to day use.

The design also appears to include a separate cover display. That wasn't part of the original Mate XT's approach because its outer screen doubled as the main display when folded. Adding a dedicated external screen could make the phone much more practical, letting users quickly check notifications, answer calls or use basic apps without opening the entire device every single time.

There's another noticeable change around the back. Huawei seems to be moving away from the Star Diamond camera module seen on the Mate XT Ultimate Design. Instead, the patent shows a large circular camera island sitting in the middle of the rear panel. The images don't reveal anything about the camera hardware itself, but they do suggest Huawei is refreshing the overall design rather than sticking with what it already has.

Interestingly, the folding style shown in the patent looks quite similar to Samsung's rumoured Galaxy Z TriFold. That doesn't necessarily mean the two phones will be identical, but it does show that smartphone makers may be arriving at similar solutions as they work to make tri fold devices slimmer, stronger and easier to use.

Of course, it's worth remembering that this is still a patent. Companies regularly test different ideas, and not every design ends up becoming a real product. So there's no guarantee the final Huawei Mate XT 2 will look exactly like this.

As for what's under the hood, recent rumours suggest the phone could arrive in October and may be powered by Huawei's Kirin 9050 Pro chipset. It is also expected to pack a battery of around 6,000mAh, giving it a slight bump over the current model.

For now, nothing is official. But if Huawei does move ahead with this design, the Mate XT 2 could end up feeling less like a routine upgrade and more like a genuine second generation product. After introducing the world's first tri fold smartphone, Huawei now seems focused on refining the experience rather than simply repeating it. That could make the Mate XT 2 just as interesting as the original when it finally arrives.
