The smart glasses will be able to replace the need for checking notifications, navigating routes, or looking up information via the use of voice commands and AI-assisted support from Gemini.
Two Different Types Of Smart Glasses
According to Google, there will be two types of smart glasses available in the Android XR range.
Firstly, there will be a set of smart glasses that focus mainly on audio. The design of these glasses is quite similar to the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses, and they use speakers to offer feedback, AI response, play music, and make phone calls.
Secondly, there are smart glasses that have display capabilities. These models are designed for more immersive AI experiences, including navigation, translations, and contextual overlays.
Google confirmed that the audio-first smart glasses will launch later this Fall.
Gemini AI Sits At The Centre Of The Experience
The biggest highlight here is Gemini AI integration.
Users can activate the assistant either by saying “Hey Google” or by tapping the side of the glasses frame. Once enabled, Gemini can analyse surroundings in real time, answer questions about nearby places or objects, and assist with everyday activities.
For example, users can ask about restaurants nearby, understand parking signs, identify landmarks, or even get updates about weather conditions around them.
The glasses are also capable of delivering turn-by-turn navigation directly within the user’s field of view. Gemini can additionally recommend restaurants, suggest route changes, and add extra stops during navigation.
Real-Time Translation And Smart Assistance
Google also showcased live translation features during the keynote.
The smart glasses can translate spoken conversations in real time while attempting to preserve the original speaker’s tone and pitch. They can also translate written content like menus, signboards, or street signs simply by looking at them.
Since the glasses remain connected to smartphones, users can manage calls, messages, and notifications without reaching for their devices repeatedly.
Audio playback happens through private over-ear speakers integrated into the frame, allowing users to listen to music or calls discreetly.
AI Photography Features Are Included Too
Beyond communication and navigation, Google is also pushing AI-powered photography features with the glasses.
Users can capture photos and videos using voice commands and later use Gemini-powered editing tools such as Nano Banana to remove unwanted objects or make quick edits automatically.
Google confirmed that the smart glasses will work with both Android and iOS devices.
Fashion Brands Are Also Involved
To make the glasses look less like a tech gadget and more like everyday eyewear, Google and Samsung have partnered with premium eyewear brands including Gentle Monster and Warby Parker.
