Google is rolling out a new set of thinking modes for Gemini, giving users more control over how the AI processes requests before generating a response. The update is now reaching Gemini users on Android, iOS and the web, including those in India.

The new feature is available across several Gemini models and is being offered to both free and paid users, although the exact options available depend on the model being used.

Gemini Now Lets Users Choose How Much Reasoning They Want

With the update, Google is introducing different thinking levels that determine how much time Gemini spends analysing a prompt before responding.

For most users, the available options include Standard and Extended Thinking. Standard mode is designed for everyday conversations and general questions, while Extended Thinking is intended for tasks that require deeper reasoning or more detailed analysis.

The idea is simple: users can choose whether they want a quick response or are willing to wait a little longer for Gemini to spend more time working through a problem.

Extended Thinking Prioritises Complex Tasks

Google says Extended Thinking is best suited for situations where users need help with complex problem-solving, detailed explanations or multi-step reasoning.

Because the model spends additional time processing a request, responses may take longer to appear. However, the trade-off is that answers could be more thorough and better reasoned. Reports suggest the feature is designed to improve response quality, although results can still vary depending on the prompt.

Deep Think Remains Exclusive To Google's Highest Tier

While most Gemini users are seeing two thinking levels, Google is also continuing to offer a more advanced mode called Deep Think.

The feature was first introduced earlier this year and is designed to deliver what Google describes as maximum parallel reasoning. In practice, it allows Gemini to work through more complex problems using additional computational resources.

For now, Deep Think remains exclusive to Google AI Ultra subscribers and is only available on the Gemini 3.1 Pro model.

Available Across Multiple Gemini Models

The new thinking levels are rolling out for Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite, Gemini 3.5 Flash and Gemini 3.1 Pro.

Google's Josh Woodward, Vice President of Gemini and AI Studio, confirmed the rollout in a post on X, noting that the feature is now arriving across Android, iOS and browser-based versions of Gemini.

More Gemini Updates Are On The Way

The rollout comes shortly after Google I/O 2026, where the company unveiled several new AI-focused announcements and introduced the Gemini 3.5 family of models.

Gemini 3.5 Flash is already available to users, while Google has confirmed that Gemini 3.5 Pro will arrive later this month. Once launched, it will replace the current Gemini 3.1 Pro model at the top of the company's mainstream AI lineup.

With thinking levels now becoming a standard part of the Gemini experience, Google appears to be giving users more flexibility in deciding whether speed or deeper reasoning matters most for a particular task.
