If you're looking for a smartwatch that's more focused on fitness than flashy features, Garmin has a few new options to consider. The company has launched the Forerunner 70, Forerunner 170 and Forerunner 170 Music in India, expanding its lineup of running-focused smartwatches.
While all three models share the same core fitness features, the higher-end variants add a few extras, including more sensors and the ability to listen to music without carrying a phone.
Here's what Garmin is offering with its latest Forerunner lineup.
Garmin Forerunner 70, Forerunner 170 Series Price In India
The Garmin Forerunner 70 is priced at Rs. 32,990 and will be available from July 3 through Garmin India's official website, Flipkart and authorised retail stores.
The Forerunner 170 is priced at Rs. 39,490, while the Forerunner 170 Music costs Rs. 45,990. Both models will go on sale from July 4 through Garmin's website, Amazon and authorised retail partners.
Same Display Across All Three Watches
Rather than giving each model a different screen, Garmin has kept things consistent across the lineup.
All three smartwatches feature a 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen with a resolution of 390×390 pixels and support an always-on display for those who prefer having information visible at a glance.
They also carry a 5ATM water resistance rating, so they're suitable for swimming and everyday use without worrying about rain or sweat.
The Forerunner 70 and Forerunner 170 come bundled with silicone straps and support standard 20mm watch bands, making it easy to switch styles if needed.
Designed To Help You Train Smarter
As expected from Garmin, the focus here is less on flashy software tricks and more on fitness tracking.
All three watches can continuously monitor heart rate using Garmin's Elevate sensor and also include a Pulse Ox sensor to track blood oxygen saturation levels.
Beyond the basics, the watches offer sleep tracking with sleep scores, stress monitoring, Body Battery energy tracking, Morning Report and health status monitoring. Garmin has also included Training Readiness and Training Status, features that help users understand whether their body is ready for another workout or needs more recovery time.
Whether you prefer running, cycling, swimming, strength training or yoga, the watches come with dedicated activity profiles for each. Garmin Coach is also built in, allowing users to follow guided training plans based on their fitness goals.
Better Navigation For Outdoor Workouts
For people who spend a lot of time outdoors, Garmin has equipped all three watches with support for GPS, GLONASS and Galileo satellite systems for more reliable location tracking.
Along with heart rate monitoring, every model includes an accelerometer and ambient light sensor. The Forerunner 170 and Forerunner 170 Music go a step further by adding a barometric altimeter and thermometer, giving users more data during outdoor activities.
Battery Life Remains One Of Garmin's Biggest Strengths
Battery life has long been one of Garmin's strong points, and these watches continue that trend.
According to the company, the Forerunner 70 can last for up to 13 days in smartwatch mode, stretching to 28 days with Battery Saver enabled. If GPS is used continuously, the battery is rated to last up to 23 hours.
The Forerunner 170 and Forerunner 170 Music offer up to 10 days in smartwatch mode, up to 19 days in Battery Saver mode and up to 20 hours with GPS turned on.
Storage also differs between the models. The Forerunner 70 comes with 512MB of onboard storage, while the Forerunner 170 and 170 Music include 4GB.
The Music Variant Leaves Your Phone Behind
The biggest reason to spend more on the Forerunner 170 Music is exactly what its name suggests.
It supports downloading playlists from compatible music streaming services directly onto the watch. That means you can head out for a run with just your smartwatch and wireless earphones without carrying your phone along. It can also store songs locally and lets users control music playing on a connected smartphone.
With the Forerunner 70 series, Garmin isn't changing what the Forerunner lineup stands for. Instead, it's refining the experience with bright AMOLED displays, reliable fitness tracking, strong battery life and, in the case of the Music edition, a little more freedom for runners who prefer leaving their phones at home.
