What Is Stored On Your SIM Card?

One of the most important things a SIM card stores is your IMSI, which is short for International Mobile Subscriber Identity. This is a unique identity or number that mobile networks require to identify your SIM and your subscriber. This is a unique 15-digit number distinguishing one SIM card from another.

When your mobile phone connects to a cellular network tower is sends this unique IMSI number to the mobile carrier to identify the authenticity of the user/ subscriber, and then you gain access to services like calling, internet and texts. It also identifies which mobile network the user is connected to as well.

Another thing that a SIM card stores is the ICCID, which is short for Integrated Circuit Card Identifier. This is a serial number unique to each card used by the SIM card operator to perform activation or other management tasks, and it is a 19- to 22-digit code.

There is something known as the Authentication Key (Ki), which is also stored on the SIM card; this is used to verify whether the SIM card is valid or not. This is a highly secure 128-bit key paired with your IMSI.

It also stores a thing called the Location Area Identity (LAI), which records the cell tower cluster your device is in or last connected to, which helps the network find out where your device is faster when someone calls you.

What Is Not Stored

Now the question that bugs us all if its storing our chat data or images, etc. In short, no, the SIM does not store your WhatsApp chats, your images, browsing history or even your Banking app info.
