Former Indian men’s hockey player Gurbax Singh Grewal, who was part of the team that won a bronze medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, passed away on Friday evening at the age of 84 after suffering a heart attack.
He died at his home in Zirakpur, near Chandigarh. Grewal was born on April 1, 1942, in Lyallpur, which is now Faisalabad in Pakistan. He was known for his speed as a forward and represented India at the 1968 Olympics, where the team finished with a bronze medal.

Hockey India extends heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time," Hockey India shared in a post on X while paying tribute to him.
One of the special moments of his career was playing alongside his brother, Balbir Singh Grewal, at the same Olympic Games, which is something not many players get to experience.

In his early 20s, Grewal moved to Mumbai to build his hockey career. He went on to play for Western Railways, where he made a name for himself as a strong and reliable player.
Even after retiring from the game, he stayed connected to hockey. He worked as a coach and helped train several teams in Mumbai over the years.
