History followed Kylian Mbappé to New York New Jersey Stadium as the France captain helped Les Bleus to an exciting 3-1 victory over Senegal in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group I opener.
The 27-year-old Real Madrid forward scored a sensational brace, which included a stoppage-time strike, to become France's outright leading goalscorer with 58 international goals.
While Senegal threatened to spoil the party with a defensive masterclass, Mbappé's quality in the end proved decisive as the two-time world champions opened their Group I campaign with a statement win.
The France vs Senegal Match Result belonged to one man, as Mbappé added yet another milestone to an already remarkable international career.
Senegal’s Early Threat
Pape Thiaw's side started brilliantly and possessed danger for France national football team. Nicolas Jackson came very close to breaking the deadlock when his effort beat Mike Maignan but bounced off both the post and the French goalkeeper before staying out.
Moments later, Jackson thought he had found the net, only to see the flag raised for offside. With his experience, Jackson should have done much better with his positioning, which could surely have handed his nation an early lead. Ismaila Sarr also wasted a promising opportunity as France struggled to find their rhythm against an energetic Senegal side.
The warning signs were there for Didier Deschamps' men, who looked uncomfortable for major parts of the opening half. Despite Senegal's pressure, the score remained level with both teams heading into the break.
France's Strong Comeback
France came out of the dressing room with more intent. Désiré Doué fired an early warning shot before Michael Olise and Mbappé both forced excellent saves from Edouard Mendy.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 66th minute through a moment of brilliance from France's two flamboyant attackers. Olise slipped a clever pass into Mbappé's path, and the captain made no mistake, putting t beyond Mendy to level Olivier Giroud's record of 57 international goals.

The strike transformed the contest and added fresh confidence into the French attack.
Super Sub Bradley Barcola then doubled France's advantage in the 82nd minute, putting Les Bleus firmly in control as Senegal struggled to respond.
Mbappe’s Late Drama
Just when the game seemed over, it produced a dramatic finale. Teenager Ibrahim Mbaye pulled one back for Senegal deep into stoppage time to briefly raise hopes of a comeback. However, those celebrations lasted barely a minute.
Mbappé stepped forward once again and delivered a trademark finish from outside the penalty area in the 96th minute. The strike sealed his hat-trick of achievements on the night of victory for France, a Player of the Match-worthy display, and, most importantly, a place in French football history as the nation's top leading scorer.
"I play to make my mark on my country's history, to ensure my team reaches the final and wins the World Cup. The rest will simply be part of who I am and my career," said France captain Kylian Mbappé after becoming Les Bleus' all-time leading scorer.
Reflecting on the victory, Mbappé added: "It gives us a bit more peace of mind, although you're never really relaxed at a World Cup. We've seen it with the other teams; winning is never easy. It wasn't straightforward today, but we know we're capable of scoring at any moment."
France coach Didier Deschamps was happy to start their campaign with a win.
"It's a bit of a relief. We were a little apprehensive at the start. Changing Ousmane's and Michael's positions made a big difference. It's always important to win your opening match. That's the magic of football when you get to share those emotions," the French boss stated.
