In a match that headlined Lionel Messi, defending champions Argentina began their FIFA World Cup 2026 title defence with a dominating 3-0 victory over Algeria in a fascinating Group J clash at Kansas City Stadium.

The Argentina national football team arrived at the World Cup carrying the expectations of an entire nation, but all eyes were firmly fixed on Messi. The 38-year-old entered the contest three goals behind Miroslav Klose's all-time FIFA World Cup goalscoring record of 16 goals. Seventy-six minutes later, he had erased that gap with a sensational hat-trick.

The Argentina vs Algeria Match Result not only handed Lionel Scaloni's side three valuable points but also saw Messi write another chapter in World Cup history.

Messi Makes History

The match started with both teams trying to settle well. Messi had an early effort ruled out for offside before Algeria's Fares Chaibi faced the same situation at the other end.
It did not take long for the Argentine captain to make his mark. In the 17th minute, Messi picked up possession nearly 30 yards from goal, skipped past his marker with ease, and curled a magnificent shot beyond Luca Zidane.
The goal lit up the atmosphere with celebrations among the Argentine fans and moved Messi one step closer to equalling Klose's long-standing World Cup record.

Algeria, led by captain Aissa Mandi and star winger Riyad Mahrez, remained disciplined despite falling behind. The Fennec Foxes limited clear-cut opportunities for much of the first half, with Alexis Mac Allister's header over the crossbar proving Argentina's only major chance after the opener.

Anis Hadj Moussa nearly found an equaliser shortly before the break, but a slight deflection took the sting out of his effort, allowing Emiliano Martinez to gather comfortably.

Argentina’s Dominance

Messi continued to dictate proceedings after the restart as Argentina searched for a second goal.
The Inter Miami star first sent a long-range effort narrowly over the bar before creating another opening for Lautaro Martinez with a perfectly weighted through ball. Algeria's defence managed to survive, but only for a few minutes.

The breakthrough arrived on the hour mark. Alexis Mac Allister unleashed a powerful effort that goalkeeper Luca Zidane could only punch into the danger zone. As he has done throughout his career, Messi reacted quickest, calmly slotting home the rebound for his second goal of the evening. The strike drew Messi level with some of the greatest goalscorers in World Cup history and left Algeria shattered.

Hat-Trick, Records Broken

With Argentina firmly in control, the moment everyone inside Kansas City Stadium was waiting for arrived in the 76th minute.
Receiving the ball just outside the penalty area, Messi shifted onto his favoured left foot and produced a trademark curling finish into the corner. The goal completed a memorable hat-trick, secured Argentina's victory and saw him equal Miroslav Klose's record of 16 FIFA World Cup goals.
Remarkably, the hat-trick came exactly 20 years after Messi made his World Cup debut against Serbia and Montenegro in Germany 2006.

Argentina comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to move top of the Group J standings, while Algeria were left to regroup ahead of their crucial clash against Jordan.

"I don't have the words to describe Lionel Messi. For 20 years, he's had us used to seeing things like this, and he inspires everyone who watches him play. We're going to take it one game at a time. The team is happy; we gave a lot of players playing time. Hopefully we can win the next one so everyone can be in the third group game," said Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni.

Algeria captain Aissa Mandi admitted Messi's brilliance ultimately proved decisive.

"What made the difference is that they have a ruthless player, almost every chance he gets ends up in the back of the net. He might be the best player of all time. His efficiency is formidable; we knew that. We tried to shut him down as much as possible, but it didn't work; he was too good for us there," he stated.

The result puts Argentina firmly at the top of the Group J standings and shows the world they are here to defend the FIFA World Cup 2026 trophy.
