1. Mukhi

The lines on the rudraksha are referred to as mukhi. They are naturally formed lines which run from top to bottom. The number of mukhi in the rudraksha helps you identify which rudraksha you have, like 5 vertical lines on the rudraksha means you have a 5 mukhi rudraksha. If the lines are too refined, sharp, or end in the middle, that means that the rudraksha bead that you have is fake. Original Rudraskaha bead lines start from the top to the end.

2. Texture

A natural rudraksha bead is slightly rough, bumpy, and uneven texture. If the bead appears too smooth, shiny or perfectly round, the bead is considered to be fake.

3. Weight and density

Authentic and natural rudraksha are comparatively heavier than fake ones. If it feels too light, then it can be an imitation. Some people believe that to check its density, a water test is beneficial. However, it is not considered to be the most authentic way to identify.

4. Colour

Natural and authentic rudraksha beads are light brown, reddish brown or deep brown in colour. If the bead colour appears too dark brown or too shiny, it might be dyed or polished.

5. Lab Certification

Through the above mentioned indicators, you can identify with your naked eye whether the rudraksha is real or not, but the more trustworthy method is scientific testing. If you really want to be sure whether your rudraksha is original and authentic, it is advisable to have a CT scan or X-ray done. This test will help you see the internal structure of the rudraksha.

Rules While Wearing A Rudraksha

Rudraksha is considered sacred, so it should be worn with respect. These small rules are believed to keep its energy active and pure.

• Often, people avoid smoking and consuming non-vegetarian food, thinking it might have any side effects on the rudraksha, but there are none. Only its positive energy gets reduced.
•  It can be worn while bathing with clean water, but make sure it is not exposed to soap or any body wash.
• Don't share your rudraksha with anyone.
• If someone gets bad dreams, it is advised to keep the rudraksha under the pillow.
• It should not be worn while visiting a cremation ground or a place associated with death.
• While wearing a rudraksha bead, chant 'Om Namah Shivay' at least three times.
