World IVF Day, also known as World Embryologist Day, is observed on July 25 every year. It commemorates one of the greatest milestones in modern medicine—the birth of Louise Brown, the world's first baby conceived through in vitro fertilisation (IVF), in England in 1978. Her birth marked the beginning of a new era in reproductive medicine, giving hope to millions of couples struggling with infertility.

Nearly five decades later, IVF has evolved from an experimental procedure into a safe, sophisticated, and widely available fertility treatment. Today, well over 12 million babies worldwide are estimated to have been born through IVF and other assisted reproductive technologies (ART), transforming lives and redefining what is possible in family building.

In India, where infertility affects an estimated 10–15% of married couples, IVF has become an increasingly accessible option. Advances in technology, increased awareness, and higher success rates are enabling many individuals who once thought parenthood was unattainable to achieve it.

Why World IVF Day matters

World IVF Day is more than a celebration of scientific achievement. It is an opportunity to:

• Reduce the stigma surrounding fertility treatments.

What exactly is IVF?

In vitro fertilisation literally means "fertilisation in glass." Instead of fertilisation occurring inside a woman's body, it takes place in a highly controlled laboratory setting.

The IVF process typically involves:

2. Retrieval of eggs from the ovaries.
3. Collection and preparation of sperm.
4. Fertilisation in the laboratory.

• Improved laboratory technologies

The Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act has also strengthened oversight of fertility clinics, aiming to improve patient safety, ethical practices, and transparency.

Although treatment remains expensive for many families, financing options and wider availability have gradually improved access.

How successful is IVF today?

One of the most significant misconceptions is that IVF guarantees pregnancy.

The reality is more nuanced.

Success depends on several factors, including:

• Woman's age
• Egg quality
• Sperm quality
• Cause of infertility
• Uterine health
• Lifestyle factors
• Expertise of the fertility centre

Women below the age of 35 generally have the highest success rates. Success gradually declines with increasing maternal age because egg quality naturally decreases over time.

Fortunately, advances in embryo selection, laboratory culture systems, and cryopreservation have significantly improved pregnancy rates over the past two decades.

Technology is reshaping fertility care.

Modern IVF looks very different from the procedures performed in the late 1970s.

Today's fertility laboratories increasingly use advanced technologies such as the following:

Artificial Intelligence
AI can analyse embryo images, helping embryologists identify embryos with the highest likelihood of successful implantation.

Time-lapse embryo monitoring
Instead of removing embryos repeatedly for observation, continuous imaging allows specialists to monitor embryo development without disturbing culture conditions.

Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT)
PGT helps identify embryos that do not carry specific inherited genetic disorders and may reduce the risk of certain chromosomal abnormalities in selected patients.

Egg and embryo freezing
Improved freezing techniques allow patients to preserve fertility before cancer treatment, delay pregnancy for personal reasons, or plan future family expansion.

Together, these innovations are improving precision while reducing unnecessary interventions.

Breaking the myths surrounding IVF

Despite growing awareness, myths continue to discourage many couples from seeking treatment.

Myth: IVF always results in twins or triplets.
Fact: Modern IVF increasingly recommends transferring a single healthy embryo, reducing multiple pregnancies.

Myth: IVF babies are different.
Fact: Millions of IVF-conceived children have grown into healthy adults. Their long-term health is comparable to naturally conceived children in the vast majority of cases.

Myth: Infertility is always a woman's problem.
Fact: Male factors contribute to infertility in nearly half of affected couples, making evaluation of both partners essential.

Myth: IVF should be the first treatment for everyone.
Fact: Many couples conceive with simpler treatments, medications, lifestyle changes, or intrauterine insemination (IUI).

IVF is recommended only when medically appropriate.

The emotional journey behind every IVF cycle

While medical advances have improved success rates, the emotional experience remains challenging.

Each IVF cycle involves hope, uncertainty, physical procedures, financial investment, and psychological stress. Waiting for embryo development, transfer, and pregnancy test results can be emotionally exhausting.

Experts increasingly recommend counselling alongside fertility treatment. Emotional support from partners, family members, counsellors, and support groups can significantly improve the overall experience.

Open conversations about infertility also help reduce guilt, isolation, and social stigma.
