Green Tea vs Black Tea: You might have already been aware of the social media buzz of matcha, which is a type of green tea. What do you think led to it? From its aesthetically pleasing, vibrant green colour to detox prowess, green tea has become an enormous part of Gen-Z fitness culture. Black tea has its own fan following and remains a classic, especially in Indian homes. Still, it seems that young people today are leaning more towards green tea.

What Makes Green Tea More Popular Among Gen Z?

Green tea and black tea are both regarded as healthier alternatives of tradional tea and coffee. So, why exactly are younger people more inclined towards green tea over black tea, or is it just a trend? Let’s find out.

Health Conscious Generation:

One of the major factors contributing to the difference between green tea and black tea is the increasing popularity of wellness products. Gen Z is often referred to as the generation that cares about its health more than previous generations. Young people are looking for products that can help them stay fit, provide skincare benefits, and enhance their well-being. Green tea is popular due to its numerous properties, such as antioxidant benefits, metabolism support, and detoxification. Black tea is also healthy; however, it does not enjoy the same level of popularity because it seems less wellness-oriented.

Green Tea vs Black Tea: Nutritional Value

On talking to Dr Vijeta Bagade, Senior Consultant Physician and Diabetologist, Medicover Hospitals, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, he suggested, “ Many people have a habit of having green or black tea to feel fresh and alert. Green tea has a light taste, aids weight loss, is rich in antioxidants, improves metabolism, and can support heart health.

On the other hand, Black tea has a stronger taste, higher caffeine, improves alertness, and boosts focus. So, choose green tea for a light detox, black tea for stronger energy. However, don't have both green and black tea in excess quantity.”

A Trend Of Matcha:

Social media, too, has been a factor in the rising trend of drinking green tea. Social media sites like Instagram feature several aesthetically appealing matcha and green tea smoothie recipes along with health influencer accounts that appreciate the numerous benefits of the drink. The vibrant green colour of matcha and green tea beverages makes them highly aesthetic and pinteresty, fitting perfectly into Gen Z's stories.

On the other hand, Black tea, while equally versatile, doesn't enjoy the same trendy image on social media.

Health Conscious Caffeine Intake

There is also a trend towards the consumption of green tea as part of the changing consumption patterns of caffeine. Many Gen Zs are significantly cutting down on their caffeine consumption, yet need a source of energy throughout the day. Green tea offers a milder form of caffeine compared to coffee. This makes green tea less jittery and thus, more soothing to many people who consume it.

Where Does Black Tea Stand:

The classic black tea is not going anywhere. There are still plenty of people who love it, and it is still quite popular among a lot of cultures all over the world. However, in terms of wellness trends, social media impact, and lifestyle marketing, green tea seems to have won over Gen Z's favour.
