Jasmin Bhasin recently told her followers that she had been diagnosed with terminal ileitis, which is a medical condition that affects the last part of the small intestine. Terminal ileitis means there is inflammation in the terminal ileum, which is the final segment of the small intestine just before it joins the large intestine. Here is all about terminal ileitis, what causes it, along with its common symptoms to watch for.
What Does Terminal Ileitis Mean?
Terminal ileitis is not one single disease but a description of inflammation located in a specific place, which is the terminal ileum. Doctors may use the term when imaging tests or an endoscopy show that this area is swollen or irritated. The inflammation can be caused by many different problems, including infections, autoimmune diseases, or conditions like Crohn’s disease that affect the bowel. Because the terminal ileum absorbs important nutrients such as vitamin B12 and bile salts, inflammation there can lead to other health effects if not treated.
Common Symptoms Of Terminal Ileitis
One of the most common of symptoms Terminal Ileitis is pain in the lower right side of your abdomen, because that is where the terminal ileum sits. People with terminal ileitis often have ongoing or recurring abdominal pain and cramping. Diarrhoea is another frequent sign; it may be chronic (long-lasting) or might come and go.
Some patients also notice blood in the stool, though this is more common when the cause is Crohn’s disease rather than a simple infection. Weight loss without trying, tiredness, and poor appetite occur because the inflamed intestine can’t absorb nutrients properly. Fever, nausea, bloating, and general weakness are additional symptoms reported by clinicians.
Quick Table:
| Symptoms | Note |
| Abdominal pain | Especially in the lower right side |
| Diarrhoea | Often severe and persistent |
| Unintended weight loss | Due to malabsorption of nutrients |
| Fatigue and weakness | As the body struggles to cope with chronic inflammation |
| Fever | With other flu-like symptoms |

"Even though Terminal ileitis is linked to Crohn's disease, it can also be seen due to various other factors, such as infections, certain medications, or inflammatory conditions, and requires timely attention. Don’t neglect the symptoms at all and consider visiting a doctor for timely diagnosis and treatment. If not treated at the right time, the patient can experience complications such as bowel narrowing or obstruction. Follow the treatment guidelines given by the doctor and also make sure to eat a balanced diet, go for regular check-ups and follow-ups, and maintain a good quality of life."

Possible Complications Of Terminal Ileitis
When inflammation is severe or long-lasting, it can cause ulcers, bleeding, or narrowing (strictures) of the intestinal passage. In some cases, abnormal tunnels between the intestine and other tissues (fistulas) or repeated intestinal blockages can develop, especially if the cause is Crohn’s disease. If the inflammation becomes infected or the bowel is damaged, hospital care may be needed.

Lastly, if a person is experiencing prolonged or intense right lower abdominal pain, diarrhoea, unintentional weight loss, blood in the stool, high fever, and/or repeated vomiting should visit a physician for an assessment as soon as possible. Alongside, Terminal ileitis is a manageable disease if detected at an early stage. The severity of terminal ileitis may vary depending on its causes and the timely start of therapy.
