Summer is here, and so is the dehydration and burning heat. Hot weather, specifically, can make pregnancy more uncomfortable and may lead to various problems such as excessive sweating, dehydration, and fatigue. If the body loses too much fluid, it may cause headaches, weakness, and low energy. Some pregnant women also experience heat rashes, itching, or dizziness due to prolonged exposure to the sun, or swelling in the feet.

Unfortunately, dehydration may even lead to early contractions or urinary infections. Therefore, pregnant women need to take extra care during hot weather. Here is a list of expert tips by Dr Swati Rai, Consultant-Gynaecologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon at Motherhood Hospitals, Noida.

Expert Tips To Manage Summer Heat During Pregnancy:

1. Proper hydration is key during those summer months. Pregnant women should drink at least 1-2 litres of water every day.

2. Make sure to have coconut water, lemon water, chaas, and homemade fruit juices, which can also help keep the body hydrated. Watch your water intake without fail.

3. Pay attention to clothing and wear light, loose, comfortable cotton clothes and allow the skin to breathe. Avoid layering during the summer.

4. Pregnant women should remain indoors when there is too much heat outside. So, avoid venturing out of the house from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Even if you have to step out of the house for check-ups or follow-ups, then cover yourself with a scarf, carry an umbrella, and a water bottle. Don’t spend too much time in the sun and seek shade when possible.
