Face Scrub vs Face Wash: High humidity and dampness in the weather cause more sebum production, fungal infections, acne breakouts, and heat rash. The monsoon season calls for an upgraded skincare routine. As face cleansing is considered the first step of any skincare routine, it becomes more valuable to know what to opt for in monsoon skincare: face wash or face scrub?

Using the right kind of cleanser can help manage the excess sebum and control breakouts without stripping your skin barrier.

What Is Face Wash?

Face wash is a liquid or gel cleanser which washes away dirt, oil and even makeup from the skin. Mostly, they contain surfactants that break down sebum and water-soluble impurities in addition to moisturising agents like glycerin and niacinamide.

What Is Face Scrub?

Face scrub is a skincare product which contains physical exfoliants like sugar and beads or even chemical exfoliants that are contained in the form of a paste-like texture.

There are two types of exfoliation methods: physical face scrubbing, which should not exceed more than 1–2 times a week, and using only fine and non-abrasive particles. Another, preferable method is chemical exfoliation (low-concentration BHA, e.g., salicylic acid, or milder AHAs) once or twice a week, as they dissolve dead skin cells without rubbing, and it is effective for oily skin.

Face Wash Benefits:

  • Mild face wash cleans oil and dirt without drying out your skin;
  • lower chances of developing micro-tears or irritation in humid weather;
  • A lot of face washes contain oils and oil-control ingredients such as salicylic acid (BHA), tea tree or clay.

Drawbacks Of Face Wash:

The only drawback of face wash is that at times, foaming cleansers with high pH levels can strip your skin of its natural oils, which might cause increased oil production.

Best Ingredients To Look For In A Face Wash:

Opt for a face wash packed with salicylic acid (which penetrates the skin and helps to cleanse pores), mild foaming agents and non-comedogenic moisturisers.

Face Scrub Benefits:

  • Face Scrub is effective when you want to get rid of accumulated impurities and dead skin cells, as well as blackheads to some extent.
  • It also improves skin texture and helps serums to penetrate.

Drawbacks Of Face Scrub:

Overuse of face scrub may irritate the skin and lead to more oil production. It also creates micro-abrasions on your skin that promote infection growth, which is significantly concerning in the monsoon season.

Typical Skincare Mistakes To Avoid During Monsoon:

1. Over Cleansing:

Over-cleansing (more than twice a day) washes away natural oils, triggering overproduction of sebum

2. Over Exfoliation:

Frequent and harsh scrubbing causes irritation and inflammation, making breakouts worse.

3. Not Using A Moisturiser:

Oily skin still requires hydration; not using it triggers further oil production.

4. Using Heavy Creams

Avoid using heavy creams or occlusive ingredients during monsoon as they clog pores, trapping sweat and dirt.

Which One Does Oily Skin Need More During Monsoon?

The face wash for an oily face during monsoon must be a gentle and oil-controlling one. Scrubbing can be helpful but must be done occasionally, only 1 to 2 times a week, and must be carefully selected; chemical peeling agents and very mild scrubs are preferable. The most important thing is to use a mild product that helps control oil without damaging the skin barrier.
