Eid Al-Adha Date: Eid al-Adha, also known as Bakrid, will be observed on Thursday, 28 May 2026, in India and not on Wednesday, 27 May, throughout the vast majority of the country. Additionally, the dates depend on the local moon-sighting announcements, and that is the reason that in some parts of the country, including Jammu and Kashmir, Bakrid could still fall on Wednesday, 27 May.
Eid Al-Adha On May 27 Or May 28?
Islam follows a lunar Hijri calendar, and that is the sole reason why Eid al-Adha falls on different dates each year. The crescent-moon sighting organisations in India had already announced that the start of the month of Dhul-Hijjah was postponed by a day, which consequently shifted Eid al-Adha (Bakrid) to 28 May, 2026.
Thus, the Central government, Supreme Court, and other state governments have already announced Bakrid as a public holiday on 28 May, 2026, for all banks and government offices throughout the country. This includes private-sector offices in Delhi and other large cities.

Why Confusion On Bakrid Date -May 27 Or May 28?
There is confusion as moon-sighting organisations in different regions often make different decisions. Countries like Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States shall be observing Eid al-Adha on 27 May, 2026.
However, the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Shahi Imam of Fatehpuri, and Imarat‑e‑Sharia Hind, some other prominent religious figures in India, announced that the crescent of Dhul-Hijjah was not visible on its designated date; thus, Bakrid will start one day late from 28 May 2026. This decision was made by some local moon-sighting committees in Jammu and Kashmir, making 27 May 2026 the first day of Bakrid in the said region.

Lastly, Bakrid will be officially celebrated on 28 May 2026 if you live in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai, or any other major Indian city. The government, as well as private organisations, will observe Bakrid on this date as a holiday.
On the contrary, those living in Jammu & Kashmir or in other regions that follow local moon-sighting committees can perform Eid prayers and observe rituals on 27 May 2026. It is advised for travellers or event planners to confirm the exact date from the state government or the local mosque committee.
