As temperatures rise, the kidneys require extra care, especially for those already suffering from various forms of kidney disease. One of the key rules is to always stay hydrated. During the summer, the amount of sweat is usually on the higher side. Staying hydrated will enable the kidneys to function effectively in removing different forms of toxins from the system.

In conversations with The Daily Jagran, Dr Anupam Roy, Additional Director - Nephrology and Kidney Transplant, Aakash Healthcare Multi-Speciality Hospital, Dwarka, shared his insights.

The doctor stated, “One simple way you can monitor is through the colour of the urine. If the colour is light, a person is well hydrated; otherwise, they require more fluids.”

Summer Care Tips For Kidney Patients To Stay Hydrated:

Dr Anupam Roy listed down basic yet crucial summer care tips for kidney patients to stay hydrated, eat smart and protect their health in rising heat

1. Include Hydrating Food In The Diet:

Besides drinking water, a person can always add hydrating foods to their daily diet. In the summer, different fruits and vegetable juices are in season. Watermelon and cucumber juices are the best hydrating foods for the summer. Not only do they hydrate the system, but they are rich in essential nutrients.

2. Watch Salt Intake:

Reducing the amount of salt consumed is essential for the kidneys. Salt is a major contributor to blood pressure, which can result in the development of kidney stones. It is always advisable to limit the amount of salt consumed in fast food and other daily meals.

3. Avoid Dehydration During Physical Activity:

Physical activity is necessary, but timing is everything during the summer. Excessive sweating during direct sunlight can cause dehydration. It is recommended to schedule the workout in the early morning or evening to save the body and kidneys from heat.

4. Be Cautious With Painkillers:

Painkillers like Ibuprofen and Naproxen are commonly used, but their regular use can cause serious harm to the kidneys. These painkillers can cause serious problems in cases of dehydration. In such cases, it is recommended to consult a doctor before consuming them.

5. Be Alert To Urine And Body Symptoms:

It is natural for the body to send out early warnings for potential problems. If a person finds that their urine is dark in colour or their urine output is reduced, it is a symptom that their kidneys are not functioning properly. Being alert to such symptoms can save the kidneys from potential problems.
