Men Skincare For Monsoon: Contrary to popular belief, skincare doesn’t have to involve too many complicated products and steps. The truth is that having healthy skin does not mean having an entire shelf full of cosmetic products. And that is one of the major reasons most men skip a healthy skincare regimen until their skin concerns start bothering them.

From tanning, acne, breakouts and chapped lips to dull skin, especially in humid monsoon season, having a daily basic skincare routine would help you avoid most skin problems.

Why Men Need A Different Skincare Regime?

According to Dr Vanishree Srinivasan Veben, Board Certified Consulting Dermatologist, Mannlich, “Men's skin is different from women's in many biological aspects. First of all, the dermis (the major layer of skin) is thicker in men, and sebum (oil) production is greater since men have higher androgen levels. Moreover, shaving regularly, having denser facial hair, and sweating more will make men's skin more prone to various concerns like clogged pores, acne, irritations, and dehydration.”

1. Start with the Basics, Not the Extras

There is a widespread misconception that the use of more products results in better outcomes. However, in dermatology, things work the other way around. Too many active components may disturb the integrity of the skin barrier – the external protective layer that helps to retain water and protect from any environmental aggression.

2. Step 1 Is Cleansing

The starting point would be to choose a light cleansing product that will remove sweat, sebum, sunscreen and pollution from the surface of the skin without damaging the skin barrier. A twice-a-day cleansing regimen is enough for most skin types.

3. Full Body Care Is Also Important

Skincare needs to be done not only for the facial skin but also for the rest of the body. It undergoes constant exposure to sweat, friction, humidity and ultraviolet radiation, and therefore problems such as tanning, body acne (bacne) and irregular pigmentation become increasingly widespread.

According to Dr Vanishree, "In case of outdoor activities or sport, the use of body washes that include active components such as 2% kojic acid and niacinamide will help to gradually get rid of tanning and irregular pigmentation. Active components for hydration such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid will provide additional protection for the skin barrier."

4. Sunscreen Is Important

The daily SPF should be included in your skin care regimen. The use of broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 or higher can help to protect the skin from tanning, pigmentation and early ageing, as well as other issues caused by harmful UV radiation.

Lips are usually ignored and have a low level of natural protection from UV rays, but the application of lip balm containing high SPF and hydrating agents, including shea butter, hyaluronic acid and vitamin E, will help to keep them healthy and prevent the appearance of pigmentation.

5. Be Consistent

Once you have built a basic skin care routine, choose products according to the concerns you need to solve, not because they are popular on the internet. Salicylic acid can help to cleanse pores and treat body acne, while kojic acid, niacinamide and alpha arbutin can help to solve problems with tanning and pigmentation, with consistent use.

Lastly, skincare results can not happen overnight; it takes time to see any visible change. Because the skin renews itself in four to six weeks, it means that most scientific skincare products will only show visible signs of effectiveness after some period of time, and regularly changing products or having high expectations usually ends up in dissatisfaction and irritation.

Remember that skincare shouldn't be complex. It should be based on facts, simple and always focused on solving issues instead of being a fad. In the end, skin health isn't all about perfection but mostly about preserving its protective barrier, using proper ingredients for certain issues and developing good habits.

Additionally, keep it as a firm reminder to always perform a patch test before applying anything on your face to prevent an allergic reaction.
