Nutritional deficiencies are commonly seen when the body does not get the required essential vitamins and minerals necessary for the normal functioning of the body. Currently, many women are trying to balance work and household responsibilities. Skipping meals, having processed foods, dieting without proper guidance from an expert, and a lack of sunlight exposure can induce nutrient deficiencies in women and impact well-being.

To know more about signs, risks and ways to fix hidden nutrient deficiencies in women,  The Daily Jagran turned to Dr Uma Mishra, Consultant - Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospitals, Noida.

Common Hidden Nutrient Deficiencies and Their Management

1. Iron Deficiency

Iron deficiency is commonly seen in women. It can cause anaemia, fatigue, shortness of breath, and dizziness if not managed by an expert at the right time. Women must have iron-rich foods such as green leafy vegetables, dates, jaggery, and lentils. Even vitamin C-rich foods like oranges and lemons can aid in iron absorption. So, women seek timely help and manage iron deficiency without any delay.

2. Vitamin D Deficiency:

Many urban women tend to spend a lot of time indoors and suffer from insufficient vitamin D levels, which takes a toll on their bone health and immunity. So, remember to get at least 20 minutes of sunlight exposure every day. Opt for foods such as fortified milk, eggs, and fish. Moreover, take supplements as per the expert’s advice.

4. Calcium Deficiency:

Can lead to weak bones, muscle cramps, and an increased risk of osteoporosis as women age. Hence, women should have milk, yoghurt, paneer, sesame seeds, and leafy vegetables to maintain the recommended calcium levels.

5. Folate Deficiency:

Women understand that folate is necessary for women of reproductive age, and even while planning pregnancy. Women with this deficiency tend to have symptoms such as fatigue and anaemia, which can impact their quality of life. Have foods such as spinach, broccoli, beans, lentils, and citrus fruits in daily meals to get enough folate from the diet.
