- CM Vijay warns legal action against disrespecting women.
- Statement follows Trisha row involving Udhayanidhi Stalin.
- Recalls Jayalalithaa's 1989 assembly humiliation incident.
Days after a political showdown over the alleged double-meaning remarks against actor Trisha by DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday warned that legal action will be taken against those disrespecting women.
Vijay was addressing the Tamil Nadu assembly, where Stalin junior is the Leader of the Opposition. He concluded his speech with the request, followed by a warning.
"Before concluding my speech, about law and order, speech is a personal right for everyone. But how does one use freedom of expression? We have to think about it. My request is that for political reasons, one should not degrade people, women and others. This is my common request. I say this because in recent times in Tamil Nadu, there is a river of obscenity and a river of malice," he said.
In an apparent mention of the double-meaning row, Vijay said, "People are watching whoever speaks about women in a defamatory way, in double and triple meaning. We have the same women as a mother and sister at home. If would be better if you keep this in mind and speak properly. I request people not to make defamatory remarks against women."

Warning against obscenity on women, the Tamil Nadu CM said, "Personally, it is people who made me what I am, be it in my earlier position (as a star) or in my present position (as Chief Minister), and our women at home have played a key role. Law will take its course on any obscenity on women."
Adding to his cautious advice, he said that there can be harsh political criticism but no defamatory remarks against women should be made.
Last month, Udhayanidhi, while speaking at an event, remarked that his supporters, in front of him, started chanting Trisha's name.
His comments were cited as double-meaning remarks targeting actor Trisha, leading to his arrest by the police before the Madras High Court granted him bail the same day.
Stalin as well as his party, DMK, maintained that the remarks were maliciously "edited" and "misrepresented."
Vijay recalls Jayalalithaa's humiliation
CM Vijay also recalled the 1989 incident when Jayalalithaa was attacked in the assembly, and the loose end of her saree was pulled.
"We are hearing that former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was humiliated in the same assembly by the same opposition. Recently, few are speaking in double meaning. Double meaning, triple meaning is being watched by people," Vijay said.
