Centre Moves To Break Parliament Deadlock As Amit Shah Likely To Respond To Oppn's Allegations During FCRA Debate

Niloo Ranjan, New Delhi: The government is trying to break the deadlock in Parliament, and the proposal that has been put forward is what the Congress has been demanding for the past two weeks: the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah. The Home Minister is expected to address the House on the FCRA Bill.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, in a meeting with Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, has proposed that Amit Shah should speak on the FCRA Amendment Bill.

The opposition is obstructing Parliament from functioning, citing Amit Shah's absence from both houses during the monsoon session. They have been demanding a statement from the Home Minister on the alleged police brutality against the protesters at Jantar Mantar.

Questions raised over the absence of the Home Minister

For the first time, a serious attempt was made by the government to break the deadlock that had been going on in the Parliament for the last two and a half weeks. Under this, finding a middle path on the opposition's demand for a statement on the absence of the Home Minister in the House and the allegations of police brutality on the Jantar Mantar protesters, the government assured that Amit Shah would speak on FCRA.

The Supreme Court is currently hearing the case of the violent clash between protesters and police at Jantar Mantar. The Supreme Court has assured that none of the perpetrators of violence during the protests, nor the police officers who used force against students, will be spared. In the previous hearing, the Supreme Court also indicated the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the entire matter.

One of the reasons behind starting talks with the opposition to break the deadlock is that the government does not want to pass the FCRA Amendment Bill amid the uproar. Many misconceptions are being spread about these amendments. The government is attempting to pass them in Parliament while answering questions raised about them.

In case of discussion, all objections to the amendments in FCRA will be registered by the opposition, and their need will also be underlined by the ruling party.

Home Minister Amit Shah himself will respond to the opposition's objections regarding the bill as well as the propaganda being spread in the country and the world.

Being a normal bill, the government could have passed it amidst uproar like other bills, but this gives an opportunity to further fuel the propaganda being spread against it. In case the opposition is ready, Amit Shah can start a discussion on the FCRA Amendment Bill.
