Bengal Assembly Election Results: Voters have already cast their votes in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry. The results of all five assembly elections are scheduled for May 4th. Ahead of the election results, exit polls have emerged, suggesting a major political upset in West Bengal. Out of six exit polls, four show the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning the election, while two favour Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress.
BJP-Led NDA In Power In 21 States
A large part of the country is being ruled by the BJP and its coalition partners. As of May 2026, the BJP-led NDA is ruling 21 of the 31 states and union territories. These figures point to the complete dominance of the BJP-led ruling coalition, but politics rarely go straight. If the BJP wins the Assam elections, it will achieve a hat-trick of victories. Furthermore, if the West Bengal Assembly election results go in favour of the BJP, the saffron party will become indomitable.

BJP's Growing Dominance
The BJP undoubtedly emerges as the most powerful political party today, but its dominance is not uniform across the country. In some states, the BJP's dominance is overwhelming. In others, it relies on its allies, and in some areas, it is still trying to establish its foothold. West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala are among the states that remained a challenge for the BJP.
In the current scenario, the BJP not only contests but also shapes the course of politics in the poll-bound states. States like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat currently remain its largest centres of power.

BJP's Strongholds
In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP easily secured a majority in 2022 with over 250 seats and a vote share of approximately 41%-42%. Despite the fear of anti-incumbency, it maintained its hold.
In Madhya Pradesh, it returned to power in 2023, securing 163 out of 230 seats and nearly 48% of the vote share. This was its best performance in the state to date.
Gujarat remains its safest bastion, thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the 2022 elections, the BJP won a record 156 out of 182 seats and secured over 52% of the vote share.
Saffron Party Builds New Fortress
The saffron party has similarly transformed several states. After being fiercely contested and conquered, the BJP turned them into near one-party-dominated states. Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Haryana, where the BJP has strengthened its hold over the past few years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah's leadership.
In Rajasthan (2023), it crossed the majority mark with 115 seats and over 42% of the vote share.
In Chhattisgarh, the Bharatiya Janata Party made a strong comeback, winning 54 out of 90 seats and nearly 47% of the vote share, ousting the Congress from the state.
What Is The Key Factor Behind The BJP's Success?
The primary reason for the BJP and its allies' rise to power in most states across the country appears to be the combination of Hindutva politics and public welfare schemes that directly reach beneficiaries. Also, women voters' inclination towards PM Modi's leadership. While states like Odisha and Maharashtra were once considered strongholds of regional parties, the BJP has completely transformed this situation over the past 12 years.
