Clashes broke out between BJP and TMC workers in Dinhata, Cooch Behar. Central forces resorted to lathicharge

Trends emerging from the first few hours of vote counting for the Bengal Assembly elections show the BJP gaining a significant lead. Most strikingly, the BJP is also gaining ground in several Muslim-majority districts, where its candidates are leading in several seats.

Several ministers in Mamata Banerjee's government, including Sujit Bose, Shashi Panja, Malay Ghatak, Manas Bhuyan, and Siddiqullah Chowdhury, trailed. Among MLAs, Debashish Kumar, actresses Sayantika Banerjee, and Krishna Kalyani also trailed. Sujit Bose  is trailing by 4,200 votes in Bidhannagar, while BJP's Roopa Ganguly led in Sonarpur South. BJP's Vijay Ojha led by 9,437 votes in Jorasanko.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee leads by 16,706 votes in the fourth round in Bhabanipur, while Suvendu Adhikari leads by 7,698 votes in Nandigram.

Reacting to early trends, BJP leader Debasree Chaudhuri in Kolkata said, "This looks like a clean sweep. Even the most prominent leaders are going to lose... The anti-incumbency of so many days, which was so deep, against the Mamata and TMC government, is showing in these early trends."

Following the BJP's performance in the West Bengal election 2026, celebrations will be held at the BJP headquarters in Delhi. PM Modi will also attend the event.

Chairs and vehicles were vandalised as clashes broke out near the counting centre at Asansol Engineering College. Security personnel were present at the scene, jagran.com reported.

As vote counting continues for West Bengal Election 2026, CM Mamata Banerjee said, "Don’t lose heart, many rounds of counting remain. BJP is cheating...EVM tempering and deliberate slow counting is being carried out by the BJP."

"But there are still 70-100 seats where we are leading, which they are not reporting. They are feeding entirely false news. The Election Commission is playing according to its will, along with the central forces," she added.,

Trinamool Congress minister Chandrima Bhattacharya asked, "Why is the vote counting delayed? Why have only two rounds been counted in many places so far?"

BJP is currenly leading in around 190 seats, crossing the majority mark of 148. TMC is ahead on 99 seats. 

This time, BJP seems to be performing very well in the areas of Greater Kolkata, the strongest stronghold of Trinamool Congress.

West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal said, "I have instructed District Magistrates not to grant any permission for victory processions today. Permission will be granted starting tomorrow. Permits will be issued from police stations. Our effort is to maintain peace. This is the first time that there have been no incidents of violence during the elections and during the counting of votes today. I request people to maintain peace."

West Bengal elecion result have triggered comcerns among TMC leaders with some calling the vote counting process "fishy". This comes as several TMC leaders trail on key seats as voting progresses.

"It is very fishy, but this is only the first round. I am confident of winning," TMC candidate in north Kolkata's Maniktala, Shrreya Pande said while claiming that ECI was not cooperating with the TMC candidates and counting agents, reported The Telegraph.

CM Mamata Banerjee leads by 898 votes in Bhabanipur while BJP's Suvendu Adhikari ahead by 7698 votes in Nandigram.

In its strongest bastion, North Bengal, the BJP is leading in 40 out of 54 seats. In Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri districts, the BJP is leading in all seats, while the Trinamool Congress is ahead in just one seat in Cooch Behar district.

The BJP has crossed the magic number of 148 seats in West Bengal election 2026, leading in over 160 seats as trends start becoming clearer. 

BJP candidate Vijay Ojha is leading by 2537 votes in Jorasanko, Kolkata. BJP's Umesh Rai is leading by 2500 votes in Howrah North. Senior TMC minister Firhad Hakim leading by 9938 votes from the Muslim-dominated Kolkata Port seat, while minister Sujit Bose trailed by 117 votes. As of 10:45 am, Bengal trends show the BJP leading with 161 seats, the TMC with 121, the Left with 3, and the Congress with 5. In Bhabanipur, Suvendu Adhikari leads Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by 1,558 votes, while in Nandigram, he leads by 3,150 votes.

Former hockey captain Bharat Kumar Chhetri has got a lead of 1118 votes.

On the initial trends, Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in the Bengal Assembly and BJP candidate from Nandigram and Bhabanipur, said, "After 6-7 rounds of counting in Bhawanipur, I will perform well. I received more votes than expected in Nandigram. I am fully confident that the BJP will form the government. This time, there has been Hindu consolidation. Muslims have not voted for the TMC the way they usually do. Some votes have gone to a pro-Muslim party. There is no need to rush into this now."

Ratna Debnath, the mother of the RG Kar victim, is leading by over 3,000 votes. She is the BJP candidate from the Panihati seat.

Mamata Banerjee is trailing once again from the Bhabanipur seat. BJP's Suvendu Adhikari has taken a lead with over 1500 votes.

Tapas Roy is leading in Kolkata's Maniktala seat, Trinamool's Shreya Pandey is trailing.

Three ministers of the Bengal government are trailing, while the BJP is has hit the 148 majority in the trends.

Congress candidate Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is trailing by 1200 votes in the first round from Baharampur seat in Murshidabad district.

The first round of counting has been completed in Kalimpong, where the BGPM candidate is leading.

“No rallies celebrating wins of candidates following the announcement of West Bengal election result will be allowed anywhere in the state today,” Special observer Subrata Gupta said.

After trailing in early trends of the Bhabanipur seat, CM Mamata Banerjee has taken lead against BJP's Suvendu Adhikari.

BJP Rajya Sabha member and former state president Rahul Sinha said "the results will be in our favour and BJP government will be formed in Bengal."

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is trailing in her home constituency of Bhabanipur. TMC minister Shashi Panja is trailing in Shyampukur, Kolkata. Early trends show the TMC leading in Beleghata, Maniktala, and Kashipur, while the BJP's Rakesh Singh is leading in the Muslim-dominated Kolkata Port constituency, with minister Firhad Hakim trailing.

In most places, postal ballot counting has concluded, and EVM counting has begun for West Bengal election.

The BJP is leading in Jhargram, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi enjoyed Jhalmuri during poll campaign. Early trends in Bengal have shown the BJP leading in 145 seats, while the TMC is ahead in 104.

Commenting on the lead in the initial trends, Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya said, "The dream of BJP workers is coming true. Today, our government will be formed in Bengal. No Bengali has seen such an election since independence. The elections have been conducted peacefully. The Mahajanalraj will end."

The Election Commission has released trends for one seat as of 9 am. The BJP is leading here. Trends for any other seat have not yet been released.

Anandamay Barman, BJP candidate from Matigara-Naxalbari Assembly Constituency, said, "This time the government in Bengal is bound to change. A double government will be formed here. We hope that the voting takes place peacefully..."

Cooch Behar Assembly constituency BJP candidate Nisith Pramanik was present at the DCRC counting centre as vote counting continues. He said, "The whole of Bengal is ready for change."

Due to the ongoing problem regarding ballot papers, counting has not yet started in all the three assembly constituencies of Siliguri division.

The BJP is gaining a strong lead in West Bengal election 2026, while the TMC office in Kolkata is deserted.,

Earlier, TMC chief and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee had fumed over exit poll projections, accusing the BJP of 'fixing' them. CM Mamata also expressed confidence in the return of her government to power after May 4. The West Bengal CM released a video message, a day after the exit polls were released. She said that the party would not allow any 'khela' during counting.

BJP's Suvendu Adhikari has now managed lead against TMC's Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur.

Out of total 293 seats, BJP is leading on 23 seats and Trinamool Congress on 21 seats.

Counting of votes for Bengal Assembly election has begun. In the initial trends, Trinamool Congress is leading in three out of 33 seats in North 24 Parganas, three out of 30 seats in South 24 Parganas, while BJP is leading in three out of 17 seats in Nadia and two out of 12 seats in Malda.

Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AUJP) founder, and candidate from the Rejinagar Assembly constituency, Humayun Kabir said, "We can wait for 2-3 hours, and everything will be clear after that. We will get to know the trends very soon. Counting agents have reached the counting centre. I also went there. Everything is fine..."

Speaking about the vote counting, Siliguri Police Commissioner Syed Waqar Raza said, "Everything will happen peacefully. All arrangements are in place. Searches are being conducted and there is a three-tier security system. We hope everything will go well."

A close fight is expected between the BJP and TMC as vote counting is underway. Initial trends show a slight edge for the BJP. 

BJP is leading in 23 constituencies in early trends against TMC. TMC is ahead on 18 seats. 

Trends will begin coming in shortly. The Election Commission has made unprecedented security arrangements at all counting centers. 700 companies of central forces are deployed. In addition, a large number of police personnel are also on alert.

On the preparation for the counting of votes, Ashesh Biswas, Additional CP, Kolkata, said told ANI, "As per the ECI guidelines, we have done a proper three-layer security arrangement. We have reserved force as well. If needed, we will use them..."

Counting of votes for West Bengal Assembly Election began at 8 am. In West Bengal, counting is being done on 293 of the total 294 seats, as repolling to be done in Falta on May 21.

The Calcutta High Court on Friday dismissed two petitions filed by the incumbent party related to counting arrangements. The court pointed out that it found "no merit" in the petitions, adding that the prejudice was not backed by any evidence. Earlier on Thursday night, Mamata Banerjee staged a protest in Bhabanipur, alleging "manipulations".

While the Congress and CPI(M) could not open their accounts in the 2021 polls, they still managed to get significant vote share across the state. As per the data provided by the Election Commission, the vote share of the alliance between Congress, CPI(M), and the Indian Secular Front (ISF) exceeded the margin of victory in 117 of the total 294 constituencies.,

In the second phase of West Bengal election, nearly 29.8 million out of over 32.1 million voters exercised their franchise. The participation of women, in particular, has made the political equations interesting. In many seats like Habra, Ashoknagar and Dum Dum North, the number of women voters has been almost equal to the male voters or in some places, impressive in terms of percentage.

The total number of women voters in the second phase was 15,738,233. Chuchura saw the highest number of women voters, 139,570. The massive voter turnout of 92.90 per cent indicates that the public has very clearly and vocally captured its decision in one direction in the EVM.

Central forces' armoured vehicles are patrolling the Malda College counting centre premises. Central forces have been on alert since morning. Counting of votes will begin shortly.

The Baranagar seat in Bengal is expected to be a close contest between BJP's Sajal Ghosh and Trinamool Congress candidate actress Sayantika Banerjee. This time, 21 people filed nominations for the Baranagar Assembly seat, of which one was rejected by the ECI. 20 nominations were accepted. However, only 10 candidates are contesting.

The Asansol South assembly seat is witnessing a close contest between the BJP and the TMC. The BJP has nominated Agnimitra Pal as its candidate from the seat, while the TMC has fielded Tapas Banerjee. In the 2021 assembly elections, Agnimitra Pal of the BJP won this seat, defeating Saayoni Ghosh of the TMC.

Government employees handling vote counting have been warned that negligence will not be tolerated. Violation of guidelines could result in dismissal. ECI has paid special attention to constituencies where there is more than one counting room. 165 additional counting supervisors have been appointed there. 

ECI has appointed a total of 432 counting observers. North 24 Parganas district will have the highest number of counting observers at 49. There will be 12 observers for 11 seats in Kolkata. In Kolkata, counting will take place at Ballygunge Government High School, Baba Saheb Ambedkar Education University, Shekhawat Memorial School, Netaji Indoor Stadium and St Thomas Boys School. 

CM Mamata Banerjee alleged that "deliberate load-shedding" was being carried out in parts of the state ahead of West Bengal vote counting.

"I'm receiving reports from various places that load-shedding is being deliberately imposed. From Hooghly's Serampore, Nadia’s Krishnanagar, to Burdwan's Ausgram, and Kolkata's Kshudiram Anushilan Kendra, such incidents have come to light where load-shedding is being done in phases, CCTV is being turned off, and vehicles are moving in and out of strong rooms. I am calling upon my party workers: just as I am staying up all night to keep an eye on everything, you too stay up all night and guard the people's votes in the strong rooms. If anyone creates any suspicious situation anywhere, surround them, file complaints immediately, and demand CCTV footage. All of this is being done at the behest of the BJP," Mamata posted on X on Sunday night.

All eyes are on Kolkata's Bhabanipur seat, where a close contest is being predicted between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari. In the 2021 assembly elections, the two faced off in Nandigram, where Suvendu Adhikari won. Suvendu is contesting from Nandigram this time as well, along with Bhabanipur.

The political fate of 2,917 candidates, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, former Bengal Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, firebrand CPI(M) leaders Meenakshi Mukherjee and Dipsita Dhar, suspended Trinamool leader Humayun Kabir, who has formed his own party, the mother of the doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Rekha Patra, who became the face of the Sandeshkhali movement, will be decided after the West Bengal results are declared today. 

Verbal argument broke out between the counting agents of TMC and BJP outside the counter centre at Sakhawat Memorial School in Bhabanipur assembly constituency. Here CM Mamata Benerjee is contesting against BJP's Suvendu Adhikari.

A BJP counting agent said, "They (TMC agents) are not carrying their ID cards. We are wearing our ID cards. They are creating a ruckus unnecessarily. BJP is winning with a majority in West Bengal and even in Bhabanipur..."

Total number of voters in Bengal decreased by approximately 5.1 million compared to the last assembly elections, the turnout increased by more than 3 million. This time, millions of migrant workers from various states also came to cast their votes. Political analysts are calling the women's vote decisive.

Following reports of irregularities in Falta, the Election Commission has announced a repoll there on May 21. The vote counting will take place on May 24.

The Kolkata Port Assembly constituency is a general category seat and falls entirely within the Kolkata district. The Trinamool Congress has held this seat since 2011, with its candidate being Firhad Hakim. Hakim was a cabinet minister during Mamata Banerjee's tenure. He has also been the mayor of Kolkata since 2018.

The Kolkata Port Assembly seat in Bengal is expected to be a close contest between BJP's Rakesh Singh and Trinamool Congress candidate Firhad Hakim. This time, 23 nominations were filed for this assembly seat, all of which have been accepted by the Election Commission. During the counting, updates are released after every round by ECI, which keeps track of which candidate is leading and on which seat the competition is tough.

After the postal ballots are counted, the votes are counted using EVMs. Each machine clearly displays the number of votes received by each candidate. The entire process is conducted transparently, and candidates' agents are also present.

Counting will begin with postal ballots, which include votes cast by service personnel, election duty workers, and others who were unable to vote directly. Then, the votes through EVMs will be counted, with each machine being opened in the presence of officials and representatives of the candidates.

In 2021, after facing defeat against Adhikari in Nandigram, the TMC chief won in Bhabanipur in a by-election by 58,835 votes. Special focus is on Bhabanipur, where TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee is contesting against BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. While Banerjee has fought fiercely to protect her stronghold, Adhikari has left no stone unturned to defeat his former boss for the second time.

While some of the exit poll agencies have given an edge to the BJP, most of them have not given a clear majority to any party.

The BJP, Congress and the Left Front are gunning for all 294 segments, with parties like Humayun Kabir's AJUP and Asaduddin Owasi's AIMIM also trying their luck in some crucial pockets.
