With the West Bengal Assembly elections fast approaching, preparations across the state have reached a fever pitch. Political leaders and law enforcement agencies alike are working in full swing, leaving no stone unturned to ensure a smooth and peaceful electoral process. To maintain peace and address recent reports of unrest, the Election Commission has launched a comprehensive surveillance strategy. With the first phase of voting roughly two weeks away, the Commission is utilising high-tech monitoring to ensure a secure and transparent electoral process.
24 Hours Command Center Operations
A state-of-the-art control room has been set up to serve as the nerve center for election oversight.
Visual Data: The facility features 90 advanced television screens displaying live feeds from across the state.

Expert Oversight: A dedicated team of 200 micro-observers is working in shifts to provide round-the-clock monitoring and immediate analysis of any incident.
Massive Camera Deployment
The surveillance network extends beyond the voting booths to monitor the entire landscape of the region.
Total Coverage: Approximately 3,000 cameras have been installed at polling stations, key roadways, and border checkpoints.
Mobile Surveillance: Beyond fixed positions, specialised cameras have been fitted onto patrol vehicles to provide a moving, real-time view of the ground situation.
Facial Recognition And AI: Special Observer Subrata Gupta stated that advanced software will analyse the live footage. This technology can identify individuals in large crowds and alert micro-observers if suspicious groups gather near a polling site.
Focus On Sensitive Zones
The Commission has established a zero-tolerance policy regarding violence or electoral interference, with specific focus on high-risk areas:
Triple-Camera Setup: In sensitive polling stations, three cameras will be used, two placed inside the booth and one outside, to ensure total transparency.
Pre-Poll Activation: To prevent any tampering or intimidation, all cameras will be activated 24 hours before the actual voting begins.
Immediate Intervention
The integration of live streaming and micro-observers allows for a rapid response. If the software detects an unauthorised crowd or suspicious activity, the observers are immediately alerted to coordinate with security forces on the ground. This ensures that any attempt to disrupt the election is neutralised before it escalates.
