The BJP marked its history in a new way after defeating the incumbent 15-year-old TMC government in West Bengal by a large margin in the just-concluded assembly elections, one of the biggest losses for CM Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool party in her political career.

On May 5 2026, the leader of the Trinamool party, Mamata Banerjee, stated she would not resign from her position of CM, citing the result as a result of a "conspiracy" and not the verdict of the people. After the final election result, it was announced that the BJP had secured 207 of 294 seats in the state assembly.
