Eight workers lost their lives while several others sustained injuries after a large quantity of molten steel leaked at a steel plant in Andhra Pradesh's Vishakhapatnam on Monday.

The incident took place at the SMS-2 and STC-3 heat facility at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and was triggered by the explosion of a ladle carrying molten steel at a very high temperature.

The explosion caused panic inside the facility, prompting workers and employees to scramble for safety. Rescue efforts were initiated while the injured were rushed to the hospital.

Visakhapatnam Steel Plant Circle Inspector Kesav Rao said that the steel plant personnel arrived at the scene and were attempting to bring the fire under control.

Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha swung into action after the incident and directed Visakhapatnam District Collector and the City Police Commissioner to provide better medical treatment to the injured and also instructed officials to speed up rescue and relief operations.

She also rushed to the site immediately. On the other hand, CM Chandrababu Naidu expressed grief and shock over the incident. In a post on X, he said, "The accident at the Visakh Steel Plant has left me deeply shocked. I am distressed to learn that several workers have lost their lives in this accident. I have spoken to the concerned officials and directed them to undertake relief measures in coordination with all government departments."

The molten steel was allegedly being transferred in a bucket using a crane when it spilt. The cause behind the spill is said to be a malfunction in the ladle carrying molten steel.
