Hundreds of Nihang Singhs from Punjab reached the Uttarakhand border via Paonta Sahib in Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday evening to protest the violence and altercation between some Nihang Sikhs and locals a few days ago.

The Uttarakhand Police was aware of their arrival in advance, and hence, a massive deployment was made at the Kulhal Himachal-Uttarakhand border. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) force was also deployed at the borders.

Chamoli clash, Gurdwara standoff

On June 16, some Nihang Sikhs were travelling to Hemkund Sahib when they entered into an argument with some locals in Chamoli district. The argument escalated into violence, leading to sword-cut injuries to locals. The Uttarakhand Police arrested four Nihang Sikhs in the matter.

On June 20, seven Nihang Sikhs reached Nagrasu Gurdwara in Rudraprayag and, after a brief argument, climbed atop the religious site and took control of the fourth floor and terrace. Initially, some devotees were held hostage but were released later.

The standoff lasted ended on the fourth day when four of the Nihangs left for Punjab, as the rest had already left or were detained.

Now, two days later, fresh tensions have erupted. The Nihags, attempting to enter Uttarakhand, want to go to Karnaprayag.

They are also demanding action against the locals who were involved in the June 16 clash and the officers who mistreated Nihang Sikhs.

The situation has become tense at the state border, and thus, all traffic from the state has been stopped. The Nihangs, adamant to reach Karanprayag and Rudraprayag, are carrying swords.
