Uttarakhand: A day after a severe storm struck Uttarakhand’s Tehri Garhwal district on Saturday evening, major damage was reported at Tehri Dam lake, where the jetty and several floating hutments near the Dobra-Chanti bridge were battered by strong winds, leaving around 30 tourists stranded.
According to reports, the powerful storm caused floating structures on the lake to collapse and drift, sparking panic among tourists present inside the hutments.
At the time of the incident, nearly 30 people were inside the floating huts. Responding swiftly, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) launched a rescue operation and safely evacuated all tourists, shifting them to secure locations as a precautionary measure.
Authorities told Jagran.com that the floating huts have been declared unsafe for operations from a safety perspective. Services at the site will remain completely suspended until thorough safety inspections are conducted and all required precautionary measures are implemented. Operations will remain banned until further orders.
Tehri Chief Development Officer Varuna Agrawal has constituted a high-level committee to investigate the causes of the incident and assess whether floating hut services can be safely resumed.
The committee has been instructed to carry out a detailed site inspection, examine the reasons behind the damage, and evaluate all safety parameters before recommending any restart of operations. A comprehensive report is expected within four days.
Officials stressed that public safety remains the district administration’s highest priority, and all necessary steps are being taken to safeguard tourists and prevent similar incidents in the future.
