Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday ordered the formation of an expert committee to investigate complaints related to smart electricity meters. He directed the official to esure that no consumer faces disconnection if not at fault.

The Chief Minister held a review meeting of the Power Department on Thursday and said that the honest consumers should receive timely and accurate bills and directed officials to ensure prompt and fair resolution of grievances.

According to a press release, CM Yogi has asked the Energy Minister and Power Corporation officials to visit the field and keep helplines active for effective complaint redressal.

Reiterating that uninterrupted and transparent power supply is a priority, the chief minister called for faster reforms, including smart metering, reduction in line losses and digitisation of services.

Officials said the number of power consumers in the state has risen to over 3.71 crore from 1.65 crore in 2017, while energy sales stand at 1.27 lakh million units. Adityanath directed improvement in DISCOM performance and quicker transformer replacement to avoid inconvenience.

Domestic consumers constitute 87 percent of total connections, while commercial and industrial sectors contribute the most to revenue. Expressing satisfaction with the improved performance of discoms, the Chief Minister directed that national ratings be further improved and the distribution infrastructure be further strengthened.

He also stressed preparedness to meet peak summer demand, timely completion of power projects and expansion of renewable energy schemes, while ensuring electrification of small hamlets and vigilance actions do not trouble common people.

The meeting was informed that as a result of pre and post-monsoon campaigns, power transformer losses have been reduced by about 80 per cent and losses of large distribution transformers by about 48 per cent in the year 2025-26.

In the review of smart metering and revenue improvement, it was informed that more than 84 lakh smart meters have been installed and about 95 per cent progress has been made in feeder metering.
