Mumbai News: The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) of Mumbai has postponed its 86th convocation reportedly due to the fears of protest. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant was scheduled to attend the event as the chief guest scheduled to be held on Sunday, August 2. Earlier on Thursday, the registrar, in an email to the students, stated that the ceremony was being postponed due to "unforeseen circumstances."
CJI Was To Be The Cheaf Guest
Along with the CJI, Ravindra Ghuge, Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, was also scheduled to attend the event. The TISS officials and students stated that the event was postponed due to the security concerns, adding that intelligence reports indicated a possible student protest in the presence of the chief justice.
In a statement issued to the media, the institute asserted that the decision was taken to safeguard the interests of students, faculties, and the guests. "The Institute assessed that the ceremony could not be held in a conducive environment and that proceeding as scheduled could have affected the well-being of students, faculty, staff, dignitaries, guests, and campus life," TISS informed.

Best Interest Of Institute: TISS
"The Institute had to take the difficult decision to postpone the Convocation in the best and long-term interest of the Institute as well as preserving the wellbeing of students, faculty, staff, dignitaries, guests, and campus life. The Institute stands with you at this difficult moment and also seeks your cooperation in carrying forward the legacy of the Institute with dignity and respect," the notice further stated.
The decision has caused significant distress for hundreds of students and their families, as many of them had already booked flights, trains, and hotels. However, the institute has assured that the complaints of those affected due to the last-minute cancellations will be addressed.
The institute further assured that a new date will be announced soon, adding that those who need their degrees immediately will receive provisional certificates.
