Tamil Nadu Government Formation: The suspense surrounding the formation of a government in Tamil Nadu heightened Saturday after TVK chief Vijay's fourth consecutive day visiting with Governor Rajendra Arlekar in order to establish enough backing for him and others who may soon take part in forming the new government.
Accompanied by senior leaders of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party (TVK), the film star-turned-politician submitted new letters of endorsement from the CPI and CPI (M) at Lok Bhavan.
However, a formal announcement from Raj Bhavan has not been made until now, and reports suggest that the TVK has not provided definitive proof of having majority support in the 234-member TN Assembly.
The required number of eligible members (MLAs) to form a coalition that will constitute a government is 118. Although the TVK received 108 seats and is thus the single-largest party in terms of its representation, it currently has only five Congress MLAs, two CPI MLAs, and two CPI (M) MLAs, thus bringing the total up to 117.
If VCK extends support to assist the TVK coalition, the number of MLAs represented would be increased to 119, producing a comfortable majority within the Assembly. No support letter from VCK was found among the documents submitted by the actor-turned politician on Friday. Meanwhile, CPI leaders indicated that VCK Chief Thol Thirumavalavan will extend support to TVK if the Left stands behind the star.
