Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2026 Schedule: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday announced the poll schedule for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections. The poll panel announced the detailed timetable, including the date of notification, the last date for filing nominations, the polling day and the counting of votes for the election to the 234-member Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

Polling in the state will be held in a single phase on April 23, covering all 234 constituencies across the state. The counting of votes will take place on May 4. With the announcement of the schedule, the Model Code of Conduct has come into immediate effect in the state.

Tamil Nadu Assembly Election: Check Key Dates

According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission, the gazette notification for the election will be issued on March 30, while the last date for filing nominations has been fixed as April 6. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on April 7, and the last date for withdrawal of candidatures will be April 9.

Elections to the 234-member Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly will be held in a single phase on April 23, while counting of votes will take place on May 4.

Composition And Term Of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly consists of 234 constituencies, which include 188 general seats, 44 reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC), and 2 reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST). The term of the current Assembly will end on May 10, 2026.

Elections will be held for 234 seats of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, with the incumbent Chief Minister, MK Stalin-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), seeking a second consecutive term, pitted against the BJP-AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance.

Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2021

In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) won 133 seats in the 234-member assembly, while All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) followed with 66 seats. The state recorded a voter turnout of around 76.6 per cent in the 2021 Assembly Election, Times of India reported.
