The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has uncovered a crucial clue in the murder of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari's personal secretary, Chandranath Rath. The criminals made a UPI payment while crossing the Bali Toll Bridge in the car that was later seized in connection with the incident. Now, the police are hoping to use UPI-related information to track down the perpetrators.

Police have detained three people and are questioning them, but no arrests have been made so far. Three days after the incident, the attackers remain at large. Chandranath was shot and killed on Thursday night in Madhyamgram, North 24 Parganas district.

Faulty CCTV Footage

The biggest challenge in the investigation now is gathering CCTV footage of the criminals' escape route. According to police sources cited by jagran.com, many CCTV cameras installed along the Doharia-Mathpada area, where the criminals are believed to have fled, have been out of order for a long time. Investigating officers believe the criminals were waiting for darkness to fall, so that their faces or the bike's number plate would not be clearly captured on camera while they were fleeing on high-speed motorcycles.

Shooters Were Called From UP, Bihar?

Two police teams have been dispatched to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar for the investigation. Officials suspect that professional sharpshooters were called from these states. The Special Investigation Team suspects that the attackers knew in advance where Chandranath Rath was sitting in the car, which is why they attacked him with such precision. Based on CCTV footage from the area, police have identified another suspect vehicle that was following the car used in the murder.

What Does Post-Mortem Report Say?

The postmortem report said that Rath had sustained three bullet injuries. According to doctors, Rath died of excessive blood loss and multiple organ failure. He was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

Reacting to the incident, Suvendu Adhikari described the killing of his aide as “cold-blooded” and “pre-planned.” He claimed Chandranath Rath was targeted for playing a key role in election management during the Nandigram and recent Bhabanipur election
