Bihar New CM News: Bihar is set to get a new chief minister as JD(U) president and the state's tallest leader, CM Nitish Kumar, tendered his resignation to Governor Syed Ata Hasnain on Tuesday after he was elected to the Rajya Sabha earlier this month. Bihar deputy chief minister and BJP leader, Samrat Choudhary, is set to replace Kumar as Bihar's new CM after he was elected as the BJP's Legislative Party Leader today.

The development came after months of speculation over who would be the next chief minister of Bihar. Political circles in the state were abuzz after Nitish Kumar announced in February that he would be moving to the Rajya Sabha. Nitish Kumar's Rajya Sabha move has now paved the way for the BJP to get its first-ever chief minister in Bihar.

Choudhary Elected NDA Legislature Party Leader

Meanwhile, Choudhary was also elected the leader of the NDA legislative party on Tuesday, paving the way for his becoming the first BJP CM of Bihar. Union Minister Nityanand Rai said Choudhary has been unanimously elected as the Leader of the NDA Legislative Party. He is set to take oath tomorrow at the Lok Bhavan in Patna.

Nishant Reluctant To Be Deputy CM

According to a report by Jagran.com, Sarairanjan MLA and Nitish's close aide, Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, and Supaul MLA, Bijendra Prasad Yadav, are set to become the Deputy Chief Ministers of Bihar from the JD(U) quota. This came after Nitish Kumar's son, Nishant, refused to accept the deputy chief minister post.

The trio -- Samrat Choudhary, Bijendra Prasad Yadav and Vijay Kumar Chaudhary -- are expected to take the oath of office on Wednesday.

Why The Ruling Alliance, NDA, Picked Choudhary

1. Caste Factor: Choudhary, who was sworn in as the deputy chief minister of Bihar on November 20, 2025, has been considered the top Other Backward Classes (OBC) face in the BJP. He belongs to the Koeri Kushwaha community. The caste factor always dominates Bihar politics. No party can afford to ignore the backward caste. According to the 2023 Bihar Caste Survey, OBCs make up 27.13% of the state's population, combined with EBC at 36.01%, backward communities comprise over 63% of Bihar's population, which means picking up Choudhary will appease the majority of the population.

2. Political Experience: Choudhary, son of former minister Shakuni Choudhary, is an MLA from the assembly elections from Tarapur. He started his political career with the RJD. In 2010, he had won the Parbatta seat on an RJD ticket. He was also associated with JD-U before joining the BJP in 2017, which reflects his wide experience working with leaders across all three prominent parties. Choudhary was appointed president of the Bihar unit of the BJP, replacing Sanjay Jaiswal in 2023.

3. Administrative Experience: Currently, he holds the posts of deputy chief minister and home minister. He has experience working for key portfolios such as Finance, Health, Urban Development, and Panchayati Raj. He previously served as Agriculture Minister in the Rabri Devi government.

4. Organisational Skill: He has a rich organisational experience. In March 2023, he was appointed the BJP Bihar state president, replacing Sanjay Jaiswal. Under his reign, the party grew at the booth level, and he became a youth face in the state. His aggressive politics against Nitish Kumar (when the BJP was in the Opposition) helped the BJP to put up a face against the JD-U leader. Until July 2024, he symbolically wore a turban as a vow to dislodge Nitish.

5. Family Legacy: Choudhary is the son of 7-time MLA/MP Shakuni Choudhary and MLA Parvati Devi. He received political support from the Kushwaha community, which turned out to be a big legacy for him. His father was a heavyweight politician in the RJD, who had been a vocal critic of Nitish. His family's standing against Nitish made him a big name in the anti-Nitish politics. Later, he shifted his stance as the BJP re-aligned with the JD-U.
