Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan officially approved the merger of seven Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MPs including Raghav Chadha into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a major political development on Monday. This move has reduced the AAP's strength in the upper house to just three MPs.

BJP's Strength In Rajya Sabha Rises To 113

The merger has directly benefited the BJP, increasing its number in the Rajya Sabha to 113. This has also brought the NDA's tally to 148. The seven MPs who joined the BJP include Raghav Chadha, Ashok Mittal, Harbhajan Singh, Sandeep Pathak, Vikramjeet Sahni, Swati Maliwal, and Rajinder Gupta. All of them are now listed as BJP MPs on the official Rajya Sabha website.

AAP Demands Cancellation Of Membership

According to reports, these MPs had requested the Chairman on Friday to recognise them as members of the BJP after the merger. The Chairman accepted their request. However, the Aam Aadmi Party had previously demanded action against these seven MPs. The party filed a petition before the Rajya Sabha Chairman, appealing for the cancellation of their membership.

AAP MP Sanjay Singh had said that MPs who leave the party and join another party should be disqualified. Last Friday, AAP suffered a major setback when seven of its Rajya Sabha MPs announced they were leaving the party and joining the BJP. These leaders alleged that the Arvind Kejriwal-led party had strayed from its core principles and values.

AAP's Damage Control Mode On

AAP has gone into damage-control mode following statements linked to Raghav Chadha, who, along with seven Rajya Sabha members, is said to have switched sides from the party.

Senior leader Manish Sisodia, who cut short his Gujarat visit, returned to Delhi on Saturday. He met AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, where discussions reportedly focused on preventing further political damage and stabilising the organisation.

Damage Control Assigned To Sisodia, Sanjay Singh

According to Jagran.com, citing sources, the party has divided responsibility for damage control across regions. Sanjay Singh has been assigned Delhi, while Manish Sisodia has been tasked with managing the situation in Punjab.

On the other hand, the party has instructed all the MLAs and the remaining MPs that if they receive any kind of call, they should record it and inform the top leadership of the party.

While AAP maintains that the departure of Raghav Chadha and Sandeep Pathak poses no threat to its MLAs, the Jagran.com report suggests the leadership is now treating the situation seriously after Chadha’s recent statements.
