- Meghalaya HC rejected police plea against Sonam's bail.
- Court upheld trial court's bail order for Sonam.
- Police cited wrong BNS section, weakening case.
Naidunia Correspondent, Indore | The Meghalaya High Court on Monday rejected the police's petition in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, seeking to block the bail of accused Sonam Raghuvanshi. Rejection of the bail means the court upheld an April 2026 order by a Shillong court granting bail to Sonam on April 29.
With this firm stance of the court, it is now clear that Sonam, the main accused in the murder case, will not be sent behind bars for the time being.

Sonam was arrested on June 9, 2025, in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, for her alleged involvement in the conspiracy to murder her husband, and was in judicial custody in Shillong District Jail for more than 10 months. In September last year, the Meghalaya Police submitted a 790-page chargesheet, naming eight persons, including Sonam and her alleged boyfriend Raj Kushwah, as the accused.
Uma Raghuvanshi, Mother of Raja Raghuvanshi claimed that Siya Goyal murdered her fiancée Ketan Agarwal only because Sonam came out of Jail on Bail even after murdering Raja Raghuvanshi. She alleged that bail granted to Sonam acted as a motivation for Siya Goyal.

What Went In Sonam's Favour?
The Meghalaya High Court observed that in none of the documents produced by the state police has the petitioner been intimated that she is arrested for the offence u/s 103(1) BNS. Her arrest documents—including the arrest memo, inspection memo, and case diary—cited a 403(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), instead of Section 103(1) BNS (which is the punishment for murder). The police had erroneously referred to Section 403(1) BNS instead of Section 103(1) BNS, weakening the case against Sonam, which resulted in her bail.
Raja’s Family Seeks CBI Probe
Earlier, the family of slain Indore resident Raja sought to know how a court in Meghalaya granted bail to his wife despite her being the alleged “mastermind” of his murder. They demanded a CBI probe into the case.
Seeking justice, Raghuvanshi’s family members on April 29 said they continue their legal fight to get justice.
Raja Killed During His Honeymoon
Transport businessman Raja went missing on May 23 last year during the couple’s honeymoon, and his mutilated body was found on June 2 from a deep gorge near a waterfall in the Sohra area of East Khasi Hills district in Meghalaya. Sonam and several others, including her alleged boyfriend, were arrested in the case.
Later, talking to reporters, Raja’s mother, Uma, choked with emotion, said she couldn’t understand how Sonam was granted bail despite being the “mastermind” of her son’s murder.
“The Meghalaya Police thoroughly investigated the case over the past nine months, but it was beyond our understanding how the game suddenly changed in a month or two,” she said.
“We only demand one thing from the government – justice for my innocent son, who was murdered. I want a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into this case,” she added.
