Intense storms, rain and hailstorms battered Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday evening, bringing  a much-needed respite from sweltering weather. But the rains and storms also wreaked havoc across the state as 47 people lost their lives while many others were left injured due to falling trees, walls, and lightning, etc.

A cyclonic circulation over the western part of the state and easterly winds from southern Rajasthan caused gusty winds exceeding 100 km per hour in several districts.

Rail and power systems were also severely affected by the storm. The Prayagraj division was the worst affected.

16 dead in Prayagraj, 12 in Kanpur

Sixteen people died in Prayagraj, four in Pratapgarh, and one in Kaushambi. The highest number of fatalities, 10, were reported in Prayagraj's Handia area.

Twelve people died in Kanpur and surrounding districts during the storm, rain, and hailstorm. Seven people lost their lives in Fatehpur due to the collapse of an under-construction building, falling trees, and other accidents.

Three people, including a child, were killed when a tree and an electric pole fell in Unnao. In Kanpur Dehat, a young woman and a girl were killed, while 33 goats were also killed.

The storm also proved fatal in the Bareilly division. Nine people were killed by falling trees and walls in Bareilly, Badaun, and surrounding areas.

Two people were killed and six were injured in Sitapur in an uprooted tree and a wall collapse incidents. A lightning strike killed one in Lakhimpur, while two people died in Hardoi due to lightning and a wall collapse.

2,000 trees uprooted, Prayagraj-Vande Bharat Express delayed

More than 2,000 trees were uprooted during the intense cyclonic storm. Several trains were stranded due to fallen trees on railway tracks.

Similar incidents on the Kanpur-Lucknow and Unnao-Rae Bareli railway lines disrupted train operations for hours.

The Prayagraj-Lucknow Vande Bharat Express was also halted for about an hour and a quarter.

Heatwave warning for 7 days

Rain and strong winds brought significant relief from the intense heat, but the met Ddepartment has issued a heatwave warning for the next seven days in more than 30 districts, including Lucknow. Maximum temperatures are expected to rise by up to five degrees Celsius during this period.
