Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Sweden on Sunday as part of the third leg of his ongoing five-nation tour, with a two-day visit scheduled for May 17 and 18.
Moments before his aircraft landed in Gothenburg, PM Modi was escorted by Swedish Gripen fighter jets after entering the country’s airspace, a gesture often seen as a mark of diplomatic respect and strategic ties between nations.

PM Modi is visiting Sweden at the invitation of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. Prior to this, the Prime Minister visited the United Arab Emirates and the Netherlands. Sweden is the third stop on his five-nation tour, after which he is expected to travel to Norway and Italy.
A similar gesture was witnessed during PM Modi’s UAE visit earlier this week, when BJP leaders shared visuals claiming that F-16 fighter jets escorted his aircraft before it landed in Abu Dhabi. The Prime Minister later thanked the UAE leadership for the warm reception.
BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya also shared a clip of the fighter jets escorting the Prime Minister’s aircraft, calling it a “reflection of the deep strategic partnership, trust, and personal warmth shared between the leadership of India and the UAE.”

What are Gripen fighter jets?
Gripen fighter jets, manufactured by Swedish defence company Saab, are among the country’s most advanced combat aircraft. Designed to tackle modern aerial threats, the jets are equipped with advanced electronic warfare systems, AESA radar technology, and AI-assisted pilot support systems aimed at improving battlefield decision-making and survivability.
According to Saab, the Gripen E variant “incorporates cutting-edge technologies, the latest systems, sensors, weapons and pods to ensure combat advantage, delivering air superiority in highly contested environments”.
Meanwhile, during PM Modi's Sweden visit, he is also expected to attend a European business leaders’ forum alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Discussions between India and Sweden are likely to focus on trade, innovation, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies.
