PM Modi Shares New Insta Reel, Urges Gen Z To Celebrate Handloom Day With Same Passion As Friendship Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday shared a video message, urging people to celebrate the National Handloom Day on Friday. In the video, PM Modi is seen showing handcrafted attire and accessories. He urged youth to celebrate the National Handloom Day with the same passion as they celebrated the Friendship Day recently.

PM Modi called on youth to help popularise India’s rich handloom diversity by sharing videos of their favourite handloom products with hashtag #NationalHandloomDay.

He appealed to youth to make India’s handloom diversity popular by sharing their videos with your favourite handloom products, including GRWM videos. GRWM term is used by youth, which stands for "Get Ready With Me." It is a popular type of social media video where a creator films themselves doing their hair, makeup, skincare, or picking out an outfit. PM Modi also aske to use #NationalHandloomDay ni their social media post.

Textile Minister Giriraj Singh Also Urges People To Adopt Handloom

Giriraj Singh, Minister of Textiles, also urged people to adopt Handloom. In a post on X, Singh said, "Fashion keeps changing, but handloom continues to weave itself in new styles with every era. Its cultural identity never goes out of style. Handloom instils this very feeling. On this National Handloom Day, let’s make handloom not just a heritage, but also our choice for today and the tomorrow to come."

National Handloom Day

Meanwhile, the National Handloom Day is celebrated annually on 7 August. It commemorates the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905, which promoted indigenous goods and encouraged self-reliance. The occasion celebrates India’s weaving traditions and recognises the socio-economic and cultural contribution of handloom workers.

In 2026, the observance marks an important point in this journey. It reflects the growing relevance of handloom among contemporary consumers and its greater visibility in global markets. Handloom weaving remains rooted in manual craftsmanship and household enterprises. Its identity is closely connected to the weaver, the region and the knowledge involved in creating each textile. At the same time, the landscape around handloom continues to evolve. Contemporary design, digital platforms and national and international showcases are connecting Indian weaves with newer consumers and expanding their visibility.
