PM Modi Facebook Video Row: BJP MPs Tell Meta ‘Apology Alone Is Not Enough’, Seek Accountability

Meta has once again apologised for removing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook video. According to Jagran, citing sources, BJP MPs raised questions with Meta over the deletion of the video featuring PM Modi.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology questioned Meta over the removal of the Facebook video, with several members stating that an apology alone would not be enough.

During the meeting, Meta officials informed the committee that the video had been removed "by mistake" and apologised for the error. However, several committee members maintained that "an apology alone is not enough" and called for accountability from the social media platform. The panel also sought action against Meta over the removal of the video.

The committee asked Meta to provide a detailed explanation of the circumstances that led to the removal of the Prime Minister’s video, while stressing the need for accountability beyond an apology.

The development comes days after Meta apologised for briefly removing a video posted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his official Facebook page, saying that the incident was caused by a technical error and was not an intentional action.

On July 28, Facebook users noticed that PM Modi’s video featuring his first address to Gen Z, during Cockroach Janta Party-led protests following the NEET paper leak, was no longer accessible on the platform.

Earlier, the government had summoned Meta’s global team after the social media platform briefly restricted a Facebook post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to sources cited by PTI, officials were set to question the social media giant over alleged algorithmic bias, the functioning of its content moderation systems, and its role in maintaining public order.

Meta’s global team was expected to arrive in Delhi that week. Apart from appearing before government officials, the executives were also scheduled to depose before a parliamentary committee.

On July 31, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) summoned a senior Meta executive after the social media giant briefly restricted a Facebook post by PM Modi addressing India’s youth on exam paper leaks.
