On the occasion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday on Thursday, the West Bengal government is sending financial assistance of Rs 3,000 to the bank accounts of eligible women in the state. The day is being celebrated as 'Annapurna Day'.
According to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, approximately 1.58 crore women will receive this amount directly into their bank accounts this month through the Annapurana Yojana.
What Is Annapurna Yojana?
In June, 20.8 lakh women received funds under this scheme, which increased to 1.19 crores in July. Now, with the addition of nearly 10 lakh women in September, this figure has surpassed 1.58 crore. Under the scheme, women receive Rs 3,000 per month, totaling Rs 36,000 annually. This amount is deposited directly into their bank accounts through DBT.
BJP Fulfilling Election Promise
The BJP promised to provide women with Rs 3,000 per month in its manifesto during the West Bengal assembly election held in May, 2026. After coming to power, the Annapurna scheme replaced older schemes, such as the Lakshmi Bhandaar and increased this amount to Rs 3,000 per month.
Who Gets The Benefits?
The government recently amended several rules related to the scheme in August, so that more rural women can benefit from it. The scheme's benefits are available to women between the ages of 25 and 60. Women whose monthly income exceeds Rs 10,000 or whose family's annual income exceeds Rs 12 lakh will not be eligible for the scheme.

Previously, village women were considered ineligible if their homes had more than three rooms or owned more than 50 decimals of land. Following the Chief Minister's new announcement, no one will be excluded from the scheme solely on this basis. Furthermore, if a woman receives less than Rs 3,000 from a disability pension or other government scheme, the government will compensate for the difference through the Annapurna Yojana.
