After the centre's intervention, social media giant Meta has agreed to report child safety-related issues to the concerned authorities, reported news agency PTI, citing government sources. The officials asserted that online safety of children is a fundamental principle for the social media platforms operating in India. They further stated that the safety norms are non-negotiable, adding that strict action will be taken in the cases of non-compliance.
'Meta Agrees To Report Such Content'
The centre has clarified that the social media platforms must take necessary steps to protect children from harmful content. The government sources stated that Meta has agreed to report the objectionable content to the central agencies to ensure safety for the children. The reporting of such content could be the first and major step towards removal of such content on these sites.

While this is the first major step, the social media giant is expected to take similar steps in the coming times to make the platform safe for children, the sources added. Apart from this, the government is in contact with the other such sites to ensure they identify, remove, and report such content to the authorities to ensure safety for the children.
Will Take Strict Action: Govt
"Government shall take action against platforms which do not take proactive steps for the safety of children," a government source was quoted as saying by News18. Amid a significant surge in the deepfake videos on the social media platforms, the centre has increased scrutiny of these firms over harmful and illegal content, especially child sexual abuse material.
Earlier, the centre issued a notice to Meta over its handling of such content, further directing the firm to take necessary steps. It also recently summoned the global executives of Meta to India, as all such platforms were asked to identify and remove harmful content for children. The authorities clarified that failure to comply with Indian law will not be tolerated.
