Jamia Millia Islamia on Monday ordered that students’ union elections be held within 15 days of the approval of the union’s constitution. However, a disagreement has emerged following the protest at the university, as group of students agreed to withdraw the agitation while another refused. According to reports, a notice announcing the end of the protest was signed late Sunday night. However, dissenting students objected to the terms, demanding a firm deadline for their grievances to be addressed and assurances that no disciplinary action will be taken against participants.
Jamia Millia Islamia announces resumption of student union elections after two decades. In an order issued on Monday, the university administration said the elections would be held within 15 days of the approval of the students’ union constitution. “The Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union Election will be held after 15 days, from the date of approval of the constitution of the Students’ Union of Jamia Millia Islamia,” the order stated. The announcement comes after days of protests by students, who have been demanding the restoration of the elected students’ union, which was dissolved by the university administration in 2006.

The disagreement comes following the university’s approval to hold students’ union elections, after two weeks of protests demanding the restoration of the elected body. While some students signed the withdrawal notice, the other group questioned whether the administration’s written assurances adequately address their concerns.
What does the new order say?
As per the order issued by the Registrar, the agitation will be halted with immediate effect following a mutual understanding between the administration and the agitating students. As part of the notice, student union elections will be conducted within 15 days of the approval of the union constitution. Additionally, the minority university has agreed to revoke the suspensions and show-cause notices that were issued during the course of the protest. In addition, a committee will be constituted to investigate the actions of security personnel during the agitation.

The notice added that the demonstrators will publicly apologise for using offensive remarks and making social media posts against the university administration during the protest.
Why Are Some Students Disagreeing With the Withdrawal of Protest
The dissenting students raised concerns over the absence of a specific timeline for resolving their demands. They are seeking a specific date for the approval of the students’ union constitution and the subsequent conduct of elections. The students have also insisted that no disciplinary action be taken against individuals who participated in the protest. The dispute between the two groups persisted despite the signing of the withdrawal notice.
The latest development follows an order issued by the university administration on October 26, which states that students’ union elections will be held 15 days after the approval of the union constitution.
