Jagran Bureau, New Delhi: As the southwest monsoon retreats from western Rajasthan, a weather system over the Bay of Bengal is rapidly intensifying. According to meteorologists, the system could intensify into a deep depression or advance into a cyclonic storm, named "Arnab" by Bangladesh. The next 24 hours will be critical in determining its exact path and strength.
Alerts Issued For Andhra Pradesh And Odisha
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the system is tracking northwestward and is expected to approach the north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coast by the morning of September 23. Coastal areas are likely to experience winds of 65 to 75 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 80 km/h, triggering rough sea conditions.
High sea-surface temperatures and atmospheric moisture are creating favourable conditions for further intensification, according to Skymet Weather.
Rainfall Expected Across Central And Eastern India
The impact of this weather system will extend beyond coastal regions, triggering rainfall across eight states, including Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Telangana, Vidarbha, Bihar, West Bengal, and Eastern Uttar Pradesh.
- Jharkhand: Rain and strong winds could increase starting September 22.
- Bihar: Heavy rainfall expected between September 24 and 26.
- Eastern Uttar Pradesh: Thunderstorm and lightning activity expected around September 25 and 26.
Threat To Kharif Crops
Strong winds and heavy rainfall pose a severe threat to standing Kharif crops. Paddy, soybean, maize, and pulses are currently in their maturation stage. Strong winds can cause paddy crops to fall in the fields, directly compromising grain quality and hampering harvesting efforts.
Telangana Weather Forecast
Speaking to news agency ANI, Srinivas, a scientist at the Telangana Meteorological Department, stated that the low-pressure system formed on September 19 in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a severe low-pressure area. It is expected to develop into a depression and subsequently a deep depression over the next 24 to 48 hours as it tracks toward the north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coast by September 23.

Under its influence, Telangana is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next four to five days, prompting the IMD to issue yellow and orange weather warnings across several districts.
