Jagran correspondent, West Delhi: A 17-year-old student preparing for NEET has died by suicide before the re -examination in Delhi's Palam Colony. The student had appeared for the undergraduate medical entrance examination for the first time this year and was under stress since the May 3 exam, which was cancelled over a paper leak.
Police have recovered a handwritten suicide note from the spot, in which she apologised to her parents, saying that she could not live up to their expectations.
According to the police, they received a PCR call on June 13 from Palam police station area, informing that a teenage girl resident of Palam Colony was brought to Indira Gandhi Hospital in Dwarka in an unconscious state.
Doctors at the hospital declared her dead. During the investigation, proceedings were initiated under Section 194 of the BNSS.
Police learned that the teenager had died by suicide by hanging herself in her home. Upon receiving the information, the crime team inspected the scene and collected necessary evidence. Police investigation revealed that the student had taken the NEET exam on May 3, and it was her first attempt.

A preliminary investigation also revealed that she was under mental stress after the exam. On the day of the incident, she was alone at her home, and her father had gone to his in-laws' house due to a family death.
Police recovered a handwritten suicide note and the material used for the noose in the room, which were taken into custody as per legal procedures. Statements from family members have also been recorded. None of the family members has alleged harassment, conspiracy, or abetment to suicide. After the post-mortem, the body was handed over to the family.
Police say the investigation so far has not revealed any evidence of abetment to suicide or any other suspicious circumstances. Further investigation is ongoing.
Rise in NEET aspirants' suicide
A number of suicide cases involving students have come to light after the cancellation of the NEET-UG examination. In a similar incident, a 24-year-old woman, the class 12 topper, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her residence in Uttarakhand's Dehradun. She was preparing for the NEET re-exam to be held on June 21.
The woman, who was a resident of the Chandrabani area, has been identified as Riya Kumari Thapa. Police also found a suicide note at the scene. The woman wrote, "I am a burden to you. Please forgive me."
A similar incident was reported from Rajasthan's Sikar on Tuesday. She also left behind a suicide note, which read, 'I am going far away.' I don't know where I am going. Sorry..."
