Neelam Meena, a 1998-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, has been appointed as the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, becoming the first woman to hold the post in the state.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) appointed Neelam Meena as the new CEO of West Bengal, replacing Manoj Kumar Agarwal. She is the first woman to assume the top election-related post in the eastern state.

Who is Neelam Meena?

Neelam Meena is a senior IAS officer of the 1998 West Bengal cadre. Born on February 5, 1970, in Rajasthan, she is currently serving as the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal following her appointment on May 25.

She succeeded Manoj Kumar Agarwal, who was appointed as the state’s Chief Secretary after a change in administrative leadership in West Bengal.

Prior to this, she served as the Principal Secretary of the Consumer Affairs Department, Government of West Bengal, a position she held from February 2024 until her new appointment as CEO.

With over 28 years of administrative experience, Meena has worked across multiple departments, including Land Revenue, Youth Services and Sports, Correctional Administration, and Consumer Affairs.

She has held several key positions during her career, including District Collector and Magistrate, Joint Secretary, and Chief Executive Officer of the Jalpaiguri Development Authority.

Academically, she holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Botany and a Master of Arts (M.A.) in History.
